My Vision for Anytype 2025 roadmap and beyond

Quick Background: I’m game developer who use Anytype to manage dream game project with niche team currently using for the purpose of writing, capture ideas from, game mechanics, attributes, story, lore elements, animations, concepts arts, world locations and many more. I basically have the prefect echo system that I carefully made utilizing Anytype features from types, relations, lists, widgets, templates and others. I was using notion before for this project, but I reshaped the system and drop it in Anytype as soon the multiplayer feature dropped.

After I found out about Anytype, I was planning to use it as a PKM system and replace Notion with it. However, it was too early to make that switch since I was waiting for it to become more robust and to gain more of the missing features from Notion before moving such a significant amount of data, like journal logs, projects, tasks, and more.

Introduction

I am writing this post not for the sake of complaining but to provide logical criticism and express my point of view and I’m sorry if I hurt anyone unintentionally regarding what I would like to be focused on in the future. this’s not based solely on my opinion, but I believe for the benefit of the majority of users.

After seeing the first quarter of 2025 roadmap it turns out the team becoming focusing more for entrepreneur/social network instead for individuals, which’s no question ask, its big win to me as someone who working in project with team, I should be happy right! and why a Anytype should focus in individuals or one category of users right? The issue for me I don’t care less what the target segment unless it affects what the service focus on. in the beginning what I observed that the company was focusing on the individuals with no multiplayer features in the time and being local only. but in the Anytype town hall events it become introducing ideas about Anytype become like social network for communities, chat feature to be suitable for small businesses which’s the minority in the meantime or marketing tactics to gain more users or else (I don’t mind this If not taking resources or efforts from something more beneficial).

Basically, like MC team/discord, Notion and Reddit duct taped into one app. which’s I don’t mind but the issue become more apparent from here. Let me explain further. eventually each use of this it will be far beyond the competitor. since the chat feature will drop into the first quarter of 2025. I will not drop using what I use to chat with the team to replace it with early version of chat even if it’s unique, local and robust. like imagine the process to import and export chat logs nevertheless moving on. not like saying this feature will be useless of course not. but it will take time to adapt or finding use cases that I couldn’t using with other software’s like linking objects and etc.. not to mention small/big teams that don’t using everything in one app or the individuals that I don’t think will benefit them since I believe most of the people currently in this spot. like I don’t think small businesses will drop slack to adapt app in early stages.

my point these features yes, it’s amazing and I can see myself using it, but it’s to early to drop and better utilize the resources and effort for something else. After seeing the 2025Q1 roadmap I found out few things that will benefit me like Notification center and tags as an object, anything else is bonus.

What I hope will be priority 2025

Look I’m nobody to give my opinion to the direction of company to take with this size and knowledgeable people, so instead of giving my two cents opinion only I will mentions also feature requests that have major votes and emphasis my opinion for it.

What I would like to be focus in are 4 major elements before moving on. organized by priority

1. Account/Data security and privacy
2. Lists (Collection/sets) Improvements
3. UI/UX changes and enhancements
4. Editor experience

1. :identification_card: Account/Data security and privacy

There’s no denying that the protection of data is the most important part. Issues such as not being able to log back into your vault due to encryption key bugs, or an unstable local-only network, should not exist. Especially since Anytype does not serve just one function or purpose like a to-do or notes app. It functions, as people say, like an OS, a second brain, or a PKM. Losing data from it is like losing a piece of memory.

The Anytype website oddly markets the app as 'local-first,’ yet it defaults to using the Anytype network that linked to AWS cloud storage, without allowing users the choice to remain local-only or self-host out of the box. This seems misleading if the app’s purpose is to be away from cloud storage and I will quote from one of the articles in the site ‘However, by centralizing data storage on servers, cloud apps also take away ownership and agency from users.’

Also, I have many issues, like the log-in method. Anytype is good at making everything flexible with the freedom of choice, and I would like to create my own encryption key/password instead of depending on trusting random phrases. Unlike a phrase key, I can memorize my own password/verifications or at least add 2FA. Another point that I and someone else mentioned that defeats the point of encryption is below; I recommend giving it a read:

I think the current log-in method will not last for long. I wish I could use Anytype like Obsidian. If there’s an option to create a vault without encryption, it would be a good addition. And like I said before, I think encryption is one of the pillars that the program was built on, but it would not hurt to add another network type called ‘Editor’ or 'No encryption" mode or any name it doesn’t matter.

my post about it:
[IMPORTANT] The Security of my data and the many bugs interfere it

I have list of changes that I hope it be considered

  • Account/vault switcher with independent network type
  • Make the Local-only priority
  • Easy Self-host and clear video guideline
  • 2FA Two-factor authentication
  • Recurring back-ups for the vault&space
  • independent storage location for each vault like obsidian
  • Consider changes for the log-in methods
  • Indicator of devices I logged in with the account/vault
  • No encryption vault type

2. :clipboard: Lists (Collection/sets) Improvements

The second most important thing is to have more and more improvements and features for lists. I will just link some pages and feature requests that I hope will be added.

Posts about Collection/sets:

Just few feature requests:

3. :newspaper: UI/UX changes and enhancements

Currently, the Anytype team is doing well with the latest releases to improve the user experience. I will not be concerned if there’s no impressive lineup of features in 2025, but I hope there will be more options in the settings, like an easy way to change and install themes like Obsidian, instead of depending on a CSS thread. Changing the font, accent color, and many more—I would just say take inspiration from how Obsidian offers customizations and utilities. I would say still there’s odd changes that I don’t like but I hope it will be improved

Few feature requests:

Add Tabs
Notifications and Reminders
Add options to change font size and style

Posts about UI/UX:

4. :black_nib: Editor experience

The least part I want to focus on, but I can assure you the community will have different opinions, is the writing experience. It looks good enough to me, but the only thing I want is timestamps, because it’s important to refer to each paragraph I write with a date and time, like Notion has.

Few posts:
Basic editor experience. Help needed!

Outro

Look, after I took a look at the first quarter of 2025 roadmap, I was disappointed by the strange choices that have been made. It clearly does not prioritize the core functions of the app. For example, I still cannot drag and drop objects in the calendar view. The undo function doesn’t work well in collections/sets, and there are obvious missing elements, like no indicator of the number of objects in the Kanban view per column, nor any cell to calculate the objects per average, sum, or other metrics.

So please, Anytype team, make the core functions of the app the priority since they’re what made this community possible. Shifting the direction to Communities/business owners by introducing a chat feature or something similar, even though it’s the only category that clearly not attracted to this service yet is not a good look.

I don’t mind branching to all kinds of users. but the app relatively still in early stages to adapt or branching for other category of users. like yes, I want shiny new features, but it will be like a toy for a lot of users because how the app operates right now. so, take of consideration make a survey for users to help out with 2025 roadmap. and thx.

Thank you for this post; you put a lot of good work into it. There are specific reasons why the roadmap looks the way it does. We are conducting surveys with paying members, and I plan to address your concerns in my upcoming post on the forum. In the meantime, I would be happy to set up a call with you to talk over your concerns. It could be very helpful for us, if you could find time

I appreciate the quick addressing of my concerns. I definitely didn’t expect this, and I can’t wait to see what the team is planning for later this year. Regarding the call, I wish I could communicate directly with you all, but I’m not ready for this yet. but regardless its neat thing addresses the users concerns directly in a call

However, I definitely hope to document in the near future. How I use anytype to manage my game project. can’t wait for the day to express how I’m grateful using the app and thx.

I’m not sure if you are aware with the concept of local first but Anytype is a prime example when it comes to to the local first movement.
It mostly means that you are not dependent on an internet connection and does all the sync logic later when you come online again by itself without messing things up. You are able to fully use the app offline (in contrast to most of the alternatives where you have to be online to fully utilize them).
Local first does not mean local only.

I was sure someone will reply to me about that.

But if you mean by ‘local first’ that I can use the app offline, there’s an extensive list of apps that prioritize the cloud and can work fully offline. Even Google Keep can do this. Does this mean Google servers are a safe place to store my data? Even Notion will introduce an offline mode later, though I don’t know to what extent this will be.

However, the site itself lists sentences like these:

“Your vault lives on your device. No server means no lag.”
Locally store your data, self-host your backups where you please”
“No server, no gatekeeper: peer-to-peer sync on local networks”

Even so, technically the data lives in my device but 1 giga of data lives in cloud servers, so what I can do is offload my data every period of time.

and here the documents about anytype network:
“Our backup nodes are located in Switzerland, and we use AWS (Amazon Web Services”).

If you see me still confused, please let me know, because I found out some folks confuse that as well in reddit. it’s safe to say all I would like to see in the creation process to let you pick what the network type you want in the beginning.

Usually one cannot utilize the software in full.
Features are missing, not all notes / objects are also loaded locally, files are missing and need to get downloaded all the time.

I’m not aware of Keep. But I know from Craft, Capacities, Evernote, Notion, Notesnook, Standard Notes (Professional), Roam, Todoist and whatnot that at least some features are missing from a full offline first experience. Some need to load not-cached-information later on-demand, files are often not kept on device, functionality might be missing (like full search in Capacities). And I bet that also Notion will miss some features when offline (for sure files at the least).

Isn’t this true by default? You can store your backups where you want on your hard drive. All your data is stored locally in the data folder, too.

This essentially means, that it doesn’t need to be connected to any server. And everything you do in Anytype first gets processed on your local device (and synced later on at some point). This overall gives a local software experience, without caching, waiting, lag.

Here I agree. “No Server” is not the right phrase here. While “no gatekeeper” and p2p is true, it involves cloud servers by default.
This advertising should be changed.

edit: I guess though that they meant that in combination with the headline “Nobody can stop you from accessing your data” - that no server can stop you from accessing your data.

One has to be an expert to get all this right, I agree. It’s not easy to understand how Anytype works by default. Those questions and confusion comes up all the time.

Regarding the above debate, I believe it’s only necessary to require users to select a network mode before creating an account. They can choose to use the official cloud sync, self-hosting, or local-only mode.

@Facility6384 I agree with this. I think a prompt during the installation process can already solve the problem.

I would make a survey and let community decide what is important for the real users. You know with full of respect it’s only your experience with that product. Even if you get like 100 agrees it means noting, you could be in a boubble, and 99% of users actually don’t care about points you mention. That’s why I would spread survey over they each community site like reddit, x.com, here, etc. and then count the statistics.

Not sure about the direct prompt. Must be designed in a way that it won’t confuse not so tech savvy users as most of them potentially expect the defaults.

Thanks @GrayArc for writing all this down in a nice structured way. I am on your side and mostly concerned about the chat feature. For me, this is out of bounds (especially in current stage of development), even if Anytype’s motto is “the everything app”. I dont want from Anytype to do everything, I dont want that Anytype will be my ONLY app for everything. It would be slow and bloated.

And I didnt find Roadmap for 2025. Anybody with a link? tnx.

The roadmap only covers the first quarter of 2025, but it can be changes
Board · Anytype Roadmap

I don’t really care much about other features he said but tabs option is a must cos I cross reference a lot and I think it’s a major gain if implemented
also, would love to see tag as objects as soon as possible
And as he said non encryption local only mode seems good as an option after reading the post while option to have a online encrypted space or a way to manage two spaces really takes the cake
1st one to address privacy and 2nd online space for other features like collaboration, or the reddit & discord like features which are to be added

Thanks @GrayArc for this post. Civil and all.
“Account/vault switcher with independent network type” sure stir a lot of ideas (even though I believe this should be prompted when the user have to choose between creating a new vault or opening an existing one, not during the install process). It may be useful to create a FR for this? Doubt it would be a high priority for the team though.

You may not know that you can open multiple windows by pressing Ctrl+Shift+N or using this menu entry:
image
Not saying that this solves everything, but may help in some workflows.

Yes It would be a nice alternative for tabs, but Anytype desktop is opening slowly. I saw somewhere (probably on github) that they want to make Anytype opens faster.

The newest version already opens a new (if the app is already started) faster.

Perhaps you are referring to this?

Or can we expect even faster loading times in the future?

I have latest version. It’s still too slow, but it’s faster that’s true.

Hey @Alan71 I found out there’s already FR for Vault switcher but it’s not that known so!
Allow multiple accounts / logins

I asked for it for android :
