Anytype must open at least as fast as other equivalent applications.
REAL WORLD USE CASES
On Android more than on a computer, you often need to take quick notes.
In my case, I often need to jot down information quickly (a conversation, a meeting, stopping at a red light… in short, it has to be quick). So I take the fastest app… not Anytype for the moment.
In fact, I often use Google Keep in a hurry, even though I don’t want to store my notes in it… but it’s extremely quick to open and the add button is visible and direct: in 2 seconds, I’m ready to write!
ADDITIONAL CONTEXT
Cold startup time (smartphone rebooted to have nothing in the background) :
Google Keep : 1,37s
Notion : 2,68s
Obsidian : 2,77s
Evernote : 2,97s
…
Anytpe : 5,92 (And only Evernote and Notion have a lot of data!)
And 6 seconds even seems fairly quick to me. I usually have to wait for around 11 to 20 seconds. That means that the moment to note something has already passed. And I am not even talking about the times when I forget and open Anytype when talking with someone. Then we both have to wait for those 11 to 20 seconds for Anytype to start, load everything, and I can click the + button to create a new task to write 3 words down, close the app, and in 5 minutes repeat the whole process again. I got better in the recent versions, but it is still too slow for my use cases.
Basically, all I would need is a quick capture window/widget/app/whatever with a simple text area to make such notes. Sadly, this use case is not possible with Anytype at the moment, at least for me.
I have learned to open whatever offline quick note application on my mobile and only later on (usually when I arrive to my work desk, home, etc.) move the notes to Anytype.
Anytype Androids slow opening speed issue still persists and I would like to see it fixed soon!
Currently I have a lot of notes and it may be that Anytype is trying to load everything at once resulting in slow startup times. If it gets fixed my productivity would spike because long waiting times is the only barrier preventing me to write down thoughts.
When in doubt, I tested with 3 different accounts.
The current one (4 spaces including 2 shared + Nighty Ops channel) 200MB → 3,4s
Better than my previous test (less well than the others but by a negligible margin… beating them would be a bonus, that’s all)
An almost empty account / 90Mb → 3,1s
a heavier account that I’m making even heavier, 1970 objects (thanks to calculation ^^) 1,89GB ->2,8s
So :
it’s just as fast whatever the size (or maybe it’s because I’ve just loaded it? I’ll try again tomorrow)
Less slowness than before, it’s great now. If you do better, it will be exceptional
To other users, don’t hesitate to give feedback on the speed with which Anytype can be opened on a smartphone. Is it equivalent to other applications (2 or 3 seconds) or worse?
Side notes : - P2P synchro was very useful here! It took me a while to load the PC version and then synchronize on the cloud. And on the phone, on the same network, it was almost instantaneous! - I still don’t understand why when I want to see the total size of my account, I have to go to the space options! It’s just me, really?
