What is your dealbreaker with Anytype?

For me, the only thing really stopping me going all in is the “local first, peer to peer” which sems a bit disingenuous to me.
As an obsidian user, like many others, i kind of value owning my data. There is no reason to store my info on someone elses computer, encrypted or not, nor is there a reason to not be able to sync my devices directly, actually peer to peer. I use other peer to peer softwares for data transfer etc, its quicker, limitless on sizes, you just need 2 or more devices on line at the same time.
If you strip away all the bells and whistles, lights and glamour, if anytype was truly the only note taking app to impliment these i wouldnt even look anywhere else, in this day and age its cheap and easy to do, devices are more than powerful enough and we all have enough local storage. Even if it was an option and cloud storage/sync was a paid feature for those needing it

Exactly. Agreed. Check my thread out: Using Syncthing instead of IPFS

For me it’d be features associated with outliners. I’m a Logseq user and a write n’ go kinda girl, so there’s friction with my workflow (which has been “adapted” for Anytype).

One can’t expect Anytype to be an outliner, but It’d be lovely to not “need” Logseq for “creation mode.” The huge respect for this team’s vision and the work they put in is what keeps me around wishing!

The essential features for me would be these:

and,

  • Unlinked references
  • Easier “in page” access to backlinks (Cmd+O is Okay for viewing, but not for moving around information)
  • Automatic daily journals

And some wishlist points that are currently on an “using work arounds basis”

  • Being able to quickly create objects from already written text, keeping it in the same line (block?). For example, being able to select text from this phrase and quickly create an object from that selection.

  • Quickly transform Weblinks to another object, while applying the respective template (or transform any object and applying the template, really).

  • Applying templates to already existing objects

  • Always being able to select templates before creating an object from anywhere (currently I don’t think it’s possible to select templates if you’re creating an object from text).

  • Ability to Tag anywhere

  • Outlining mode, that retains block hierarchy

  • A calendar view to create a task management page simillar to teuxdeux

Thank you!

To make it clear: Your data is stored exclusively on your own device, no one else’s. It’s discreet E2EE P2P infrastructure, not torrents. The peers in this case being solely devices which possess your Recovery Phrase. They communicate through your own local network, whether you have an internet connection or not, or they can use a backup node if you’re in a remote location.

For me it’s mostly loosing information when importing stuff from Notion, like bookmark captions and comments on every block. I added request for it in Assign caption and comments to bookmarks and embeds, but looks like none else care about this so I’m sticking with Notion for now.
I don’t see any mention of comments in models.proto file, but I think they would be useful, especially when Multiplayer will be added.

Edit:

After using Anytype for much longer, I have narrowed down my dealbreakers to 5 functionalities.

  1. A way to change the default storage location from the app settings, without coding.

  2. A search function that can search not only the title of objects, but also the relations, tags, etc, and the words inside the objects. The search results need to be shown in an organized way so that it is clear whether the search results are a title, relation, type or word, or link inside the document.

  3. Rename images, pdfs, music and other media files, and give them relations.

  4. A way to link to blocks or make a portal to a part of of another object. These should be linked blocks, as in, changing contents of the block, updates the block in all places that it is present.

  • Also to find and a way to make the same media file appear in different objects.
  • This is in addition to the option to duplicate a block and paste or move it to another object, not a replacement.
  1. A way to annotate and write and doodle on the pdfs and images, and a doodle block with a color wheel option.
  • this is for digital books, research paper reading and breaking down anatomy and other types of images. The doodle block is for quickly sketching up a scenario or personalized diagram to better understand a topic.
  • I will be greedy here and add the wish for having a way to link the annotations I make in my pdfs and images to actual objects and relation.
  • A good example of this is the Excalidraw plugin of Obsidian (for linking the image annotation). And a good example of what I mean by - linking to the annotation of pdfs to the notes I make about the annotation - is how Remnote handles pdfs.

These things are a must for me.

I know the team is busy building core features. But once those progress a bit, I hope these get picked up by the team. Each of the things I have mentioned has a feature request already.

I hope everyone is having a good day. Eagerly waiting for the multi-space and multi-player mode and the eventual web publish features.

Interesting, i was told otherwise. Where can i find my files/notes on my devices please?
Regards the peer to peer issue, i use a few p2p softwares, non of them pass info from peer to peer if not online at the same time, but anytype does. If this is through the backup node, which of my devices is this on and where can i locate that please?

I would love a definitive answer on this as it is the one thing keeping me from going all in on anytype
Many thanks

Me too for the lack of formula…

When I saw the video about journaling, the speaker made me though at first that I would be able to get a dashboard with stats … but that requires formula…

Having a database without being able to get summary, max, min, return values of a column if there is a value in another… is not much helpful in the end.

Well, after 2 days of discovering the app… And I can tell you that I WANT TO USE ANYTYPE for so many reasons (mainly its philosophy) !!!

If they were to have 2 Deal Breaker for me, there are actually 3 :

1. Tags Management like in Evernote / Bear
I don’t need to see connections everywhere… I need to be able to find easily all elements relative to a thematic of my choice.

Plenty enough has been said about Evernote. It’s just well done. No need to go innovative about it. > Copy is great enough ! => I find Bear’s tag customisation better than Evernote although I am not fan of their choice of adding tags inside a note’s text rather than to the object itself (the note metadata).

EDIT : THIS IS NOT A DEAL BREAKER ANYMORE !
It is yet not as polished as other apps but the need is met with a Set on relationships.
More info here : Terminology and Concepts - #42 by GuipeL

2. Not being able to sync on my Google Drive or iCloud
I don’t want to invest lots of time on it only to have a bad surprise afterwards… been there, never again !

The lack of visibility on future price of sync makes me hold my horses…

3. Text with Markdown…
EDIT > I discovered that you could actually set text & highlight colours… it’s not perfect but it makes it a bit less of a deal breaker
The all point of notes is to enjoy reading them, or finding the info quickly in a long text.
It’s a bit similar to my lack of desire to see connections everywhere… I foresee loads of time polishing the connections… for notes that look meh to me.

It may look kinda futile for some but I like having notes with different fonts, coloured text, different colour of titles depending on the notes, better table management… (maybe at least be able to set the look & feel of markdown in a template)

EDIT : JUST NEED A LITTLE BIT PATIENCE, THAT WILL COME
With Themes !!!

I like all of these a lot. Do they all have corresponding feature requests?

Hi!
Yes. There are FRs for each. I have linked the ones I could find below.

These are “must-haves” for me. I love the core philosophy of the team and the type and object based system of PKM. But, without the functions mentioned in my post, my workflow is greatly hampered.

I do have other requests that would enhance my work experience. But those are not deal-breakers. Some of the “nice-to-haves” are:

  • being able to see ALL relations in the graph, not only the object-type relations and
  • more filter and canvus-like functionality for the graph.
  • A way to distinguish different views of sets and collections from the graph
  • a way to filter objects by templates,
  • a way to automatically add objects to a collection,
  • a way to view all related or linked objects from the object without opening the flow- graph,
  • :two_hearts:color wheel :two_hearts:.
  • Nested relations (inheritance)
  • inline relations (tags)

Also, adding a layer on top of Anytype, which enables us to doodle in Any place in our app, would be a dream. :star_struck:

These also have there own FRs.

But, for fully adopting Anytype, I need those 5 features that mentioned in the original post.:slightly_smiling_face: The others are for increasing efficiency.

If you like the requests, you can vote them up. :+1:

Have a good day.

Handwriting, whiteboard or canvus FR :

Will do! Thanks.

Hello, after a few days of an amazing experience, I feel there is a lack in these topics:

1.	Aggregation functions for sets/collections (or even simple tables) to count, sum, or get the average value of numbers.
2.	A whiteboard or graph with custom positions and edge descriptions - to enhance the mind mapping experience.
3.	Templates with placeholders for objects or their properties. For example, in a template of an object, we can get an inline set with filters with a new object.
4.	VIM mode.

I haven’t mentioned things that are on the near roadmap. For all my points, there are already feature requests.

Hi,
quite new here so I might be wrong on this.

Hi @Tamalika, wouldn’t a object solve the block linking problem? Combined with the following FR to better display these objects, you would also have a synchronized view for the created object.

Hi @Mikez, I agree with your view on lack of topics.
I would love to see the option of templates with placeholders and find that the lack of this is quite a hurdle to working with Anytype on larger projects.

Here are a few links to it, since I just created one of them and still had it at hand

Cheers

I would like to see more advanced search options that include filtering by relations and content. Including full phrase search and boolean logic.

Sets are almost there, but are lacking some key features.

I can’t believe there’s no monthly calendar view.

That’s a showstopper right there. I’m so bummed - everything else is awesome!

Have to stick with Notion until then. Sigh.

Hi!

For linking to a block, I want a way to make a particular line or paragraph in one object appear inside another object. And that has to be connected so that any change I make in the “embeded” object is updated in both objects.:page_with_curl:

A good example is the “portals” function in the “Remnote” app. I also like the block embed feature in Obsidian.

If I understand correctly, there is a FR to make the appearance of a link more distinguishable from normal text. And I agree with that. :+1: But that would still leave me wanting to embed one object inside another.

Turning one line into an object to link to another object as an inline object doesn’t work because that would hide the contents of each object. Just the heading of the inline object will be shown. And that will break the flow of thought inside both documents. A portal-type connected, embedded object is what I need. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

EDIT : It would also be good if, instead of embedded portals, I could make a relation to a block of text inside an object. We can currently make relation to objects, emails, urls, status, tags, and text. So maybe we could create a relation to a block of text inside an object. Since, in Anytype, everything is an object, a block of text can also be considered an object, at least in my mind. And so, maybe we can make a relation to it. A good example of this is the Obsidian app. Where we can choose to make a link to a note. Then we can further decide if we want to link to a particular heading or a block of text inside the note.

I hope this helps.

Gooday.

There is a monthly calendar view for sets and collections now. It just got pushed into beta this week. Should be there in the next full release.

Well the App is an really good project and i like that clean look, but one of the most annoying things is, that an table cant have an formula field like in every other more complex note taking app and rollups like just representing the value of an other column.

The rest is well developed but without this are the tables useles, because people cant automate and aggregate some content/workflows.
I have seen that people are wrote that a long time ago, so dont know why it isnt implemented.
I really hope you guys will implement it. There are surely more people which cant setup theyr workflow what means, that theyr useing it only as an note tacking app and if so they search alternatives.

Anytype is an exciting proposition but as a researcher/writer it is crippled by not offering a word/character count in the pane. I’m not a developer but I would have thought it would be pretty easy to implement. Like now!
