What is your dealbreaker with Anytype?

For me, it’s the fact it feels so much like Notion, but is so incredibly different. In some ways that’s really really good. But in other ways, it’s creating a massive learning curve.

By positioning themselves to look and act like Notion, people are expecting it to function like Notion because their default muscle memory for database apps are all aligned with Notion.

For instance, when I create an object I expect to see that objects database and start adding to it. But there is no database when I create an object. I now have to have to make a Set. And when I add properties or relations to the object, they don’t even show up in the object. I have to go into the object and then add in all the relations even though they are already associated with the object? It’s super confusing.

So all my muscle memory thinks I’m in Notion, but the learning curve is much higher. There definitely needs to be way more videos or blog posts showing how people set things up. Just look at Reflects YouTube channel. They have an example of how to do almost anything in Reflect.

But AnyType’s mobile app is already WAY better than Notion’s. And the way Anytype actually has tasks with checkboxes is amazing.

Hello!
This is a very important request for me and many others in the community.
Please feel free to vote here so the team knows that it is a much-awaited feature.

Have a good day.

That’s funny, I wrote on that post earlier today before you messaged me actually. Yeah for sure I’ve had it upvoted for quite a while I was following it.

I guess for me a real dealbreaker would be a solid integration of mail and calendar functionality :mailbox::date: Whiteboard/Canvas similar to Obsidian.

Awesome. :sparkles:. Hope this gets picked up.

Yeah, I’m keeping my fingers crossed it’s a little disappointing to see it currently listed as Improbable on the feature list board.

I keep trying some other software because they have it but they haven’t got most of the features that keep me with Anytype.

That is also my situation. I keep bouncing between Concepts, Canvus in Obsidian, sometimes Nebo and Anytype. For anything, I have to first find the relevent app then start writing or revising. And copying one note multiple times into different software when I need to change the way they are arranged is also an issue .. Just like I can have one favourite app for video, one for image, another for making presentations and another for messaging. Similarly, I wish I had just ONE favourite app for all my personal notes, and use others for only very specific purposes, sparingly, instead of bouncing between 3-4 apps all the time. I hope Anytype will become it soon.

I’m not too worried, I think it’s definitely going to be built, just probably not in core. Given a choice between the core team building Obsidian Canvas in Anytype, and the core team focusing on granular control over graph views and layout and the ability to save graph views as objects, I’d rather have the latter. That’s the thing that doesn’t exist anywhere yet, and the community can be counted on to build canvas on their own now that Obsidian has given everyone a clear idea of how it works in practice.

Right now the big dealbreaker is a lack of any heading greater than H4. This is a pretty basic limitation on how I would normally take notes.

If you have tags X, Y, Z and you give one object X & Y and go to the Kanban view, it makes a new category XY and there’s no way to have it just put the object in both X and Y.

Also after following the meal plan tutorial there doesn’t seem to be a way to actually get your ingredients into a list. I would have assumed clicking on the ingredients column and selecting ‘create set’ would make a set of the ingredients but it just makes a set of recipes instead, including ones that don’t contain any of the ingredients in the meal plan .

The android app is not available on fdroid. Nor is there a repo link to add to the fdroid and thus install the app and pull the updates.

I currently use Notion, with my needs being almost exclusively relating to study notes. I’ve been getting frustrated by how slow Notion is getting which is why I was searching for a new note-taking app. I came across Anytype and only installed it yesterday. For the most part, I quite like the UI and that the rich text options are similar to Notion, but already there are little things that are stopping me from migrating to it:

  • If my cursor is in a non-starting position in the first row of text in a text block, pressing the up arrow moves the cursor to the start of the block, instead of moving to the line above
  • Bold, italics, underline do not work when using Ctrl+B/I/U, but if I finish writing whatever text and then highlight the text I want to make bold/italics/underlined, then using Ctrl+B/I/U works. I don’t get that
  • More of a learning curve even to do simple things. Many of the structures seem unnecessary
  • Would prefer if the title area (which displays the name of the current page) instead displayed the hierarchical path to the current page
  • cannot drag blocks upwards / downwards to a point on the page that was not in the initial viewing window

I appreciate these are minor things but that is just my 2c

Anytype is not like Notion where you can have subpages, there’s no hierarchy.

This seems to work for me, but maybe I’m misunderstanding something. Can you elaborate?

Oh ok I did not know that, that makes sense.

The video above should show you the issue I had. Thanks.

First let me say that Anytype really, really resonates with me in a way software normally doesn’t. I’m a raging fan.

BUT. At the moment, my dealbreaker with Anytype is the mobile app(s) for iOS/PadOS. Things show up differently, set filters are lost, relations in sets disappear, set view options change, inline sets don’t operate correctly, etc. Ideally, the PadOS version would look more like desktop, not the iOS app.

Seems like that is a bug when trying to drag and drop in modal windows. Can you please create a bug report for it?

sure

The only locked relations are the default ones that can’t be changed like object type, created date, etc. Every object has to have these relations which is why they are locked. You don’t need to edit them, they update automatically.

You can add a relation without going into the relation settings (which they call the Library). Just click on the relations menu for an object, then click “add new” at the bottom. Start typing the relationship name and if it doesn’t exist, you will be prompted to create the new relation right there.

There is another type of locked relation which I think is causing your issue. The included relations that everyone gets with their account (like Tag) cannot currently be edited. So although they don’t have a lock when viewing on the relations tab of an object, once you click on them you will see a lock because you can’t edit the included relations.

This is admittedly a bad design and they already confirmed that this is being fixed in the near future.

So either use their included Tag relation or just ignore and use your own. You can create as many relations as you want that use the relation type “tag” which is similar to Notion’s multi-select. Anytype’s status relation type is similar to Notion’s single select.

Hope this help!

This is a big thing for me. Also, I feel like I’d be locked into Anytype. It’s an annoying mess to try to import from Logseq. Every object should be editable-- I know this isn’t uncommon feedback. I should be able to delete Human and Contact too.
Currently, I still use Logseq because it’s easy to use but extremely customizable and deep-- especially with plugins. I can just dump everything from my brain into the journal, then clean it up later with links and tags. I’m still using Anytype to test things and build out a small network of friends and family and I’m loving it. It’s a lot of fun to objectify my friends and family into discrete little relations.
Also, I know it’s also been said, is the team committed to making it the project open-source, or just open-code? And thanks to all of the team for all of their hard work on this cool project!

Hi, I’m a researcher, use Anytype for storing my notes and would really love to use it for drafting texts too. However, there are a few reasons I can’t, and I started listing them (the list is not exhaustive). Seemingly small issues but if I should choose between Anytype and MS Word (or similar), I’ll choose the latter precisely for these reasons.

They all are known issues/feature requests, so I’m just highlighting them here in the hope that maybe they will resonate with more people and could be quickly implemented:

  1. Multi-Block Individual Text Selection
  2. Pasted text not preserving line breaks (or similar issue)
  3. Text copied from OneNote pasted in Anytype pastes as image.png
  4. Word and character count on edge of note window
