Yes, I did, see that the ability to self-host is possible now.
I also mentioned it in my post that I made in reply to @AnyChris. I meant that I am also very eager about the having the ability to change storage and network settings from the within the app. With how I have seen of the Anytype team, I know they will implement things at the most correct moment, and all of the features so far have been steller.

My deal breakers:
- (As others have noted) - My data stored in a format I can get OUT easily, read easily, etc. I won’t move fully into anything that “traps” me and my data / files / information.
- No Evernote Import / Broken HTML import. I’m currently using Evernote and would like to move some things over - however; there is no Evernote Import tool AND basic HTML import has the MASSIVE bug that it does not import images. Import HTML doesn't import image
- “Lazy Data Input” - Easy, no friction options for getting content in with quick tags, not having to decide where it goes, etc. Then the possibility to move it around, organize latter. AND a robust search to find things I may not have organized. Why I switched back to Evernote (from Notion/Obsidian) and why Anytype should care!
- I need a web clipper.
Not quite deal breakers; but constant, annoying friction for me:
- Cover and Thumbnail images are still a real pain to set if the image you want is already on the page.
- No way to rename an image in the app (so again, dealing with covers / thumbnails is tedious.)
- Toggle format is so limited. (I want headings and other text to also be able to toggle expanded / collapsed.)
- Formating a link into a heading truncates the text (WHY!??!).
- Tag options are really powerful / flexible. HOWEVER their current implementation is clunky to use. I either end up with a MASSIVE list of tags that shows up on everything; or I create many tag relations for each category of item. (ie - a “Recipe Tags” relation and a “School Tags” relation and a “Health Tags” relation… etc. ). Some sort of tag hierarchy or tag relation manager would be a great help. (And assist with my point #3 above.).
Happy to read that you’re experiencing the same issue with tags.
Rather than a tag relation manager, I suggested the ability to segregate relations: Add support for collection-specific relations
What I would like most is that by default a relation is set or collection specific, and that only if we decide (though a checkbox or toggle), that relation would show up in the rest of the space. Does that sound like a good solution to your issue @LauraH ?
This is one of the silliest, smallest things but I spoiled myself with Notion having a serif font option and now I wish the option existed in every app, especially if it’s an app I process a lot of text with.
Hi @kissecat there is actually a feature request for this topic.
Exact same gripes for me, love the format of all of anytype, love the options, but I don’t feel in control of my data which eclipses any good I may have.
Also weary after watching the company take 8 months to get out a half decent privacy statement when people were asking, and the company was storing user data.
Really hoping for a nice clear simple:
- Here’s your data storage location and how it’s formatted and how to keep things local only
- Here’s how to comfortably move it and back it up yourself (not necessarily sync it)
I’m hoping that information is out there and I just can’t find it.
The huge penalty that Anytype imposes when you don’t plan your templates ahead is the huge dealbreaker for me. I think this feature request could help, but I don’t think that’s the direction the AnyTeam is taking.
Not sure if that would be enough for you, but Option to apply template to an existing object is one of the most requested features and it’s on the roadmap for this quarter : Anytype Feature Roadmap 🪩 · GitHub
My deal breakers:
I talk about AT around me. I’ve just introduced it to two potential future users, and I share their “dealbreaker”.
1st - advanced Notion user
Missing to switch :
- Formulas are essential (revenue calculations, etc.)
(FR : Derived Relations ( Formulas )) - Application of modifications to a template or type to all objects with this template or type (otherwise impossible to make a database evolve over time).
(FR : Option to apply template to an existing object) - A more reliable Notion import
(See discussion : Notion Import Confidence Poll & Appraisal ⚖) - to a lesser extent: have “local” relationships and types, i.e. specific to a base (collection). Important when you have many distinct databases
(So many FR ^^)
Good points: offline, self-hosting, inserting relations into the page… enough to be interested, she’s waiting for my go on the previous points to install and take an interest.
2nd - Evernote user
- Display of a tag list in the sidebar, enabling one-click display of all tagged objects
(FR : Unique tag view) - And other less important points more related to ergonomics and the interface (PDF resizing, more powerful search, ease of mass editing, etc.).
I will second the lack of formulas as a deal-breaker (for my wife moreso than me, as she is currently using Notion to manage her business and formulas are essential for her). It’s crazy to me that formulas are one of the top (maybe the top?) requested feature, and it looks like there is no real interest on the part of the AT team, apart from one dev who I recall is trying to push it.
Could you please elaborate and give some examples?

I think we need to make a distinction between dealbreakers that are linked to Feature requests and can be integrated at any stage of Anytype’s development, and those that are dependent on the entire architecture, the very foundations of Anytype, which will soon have to consolidate and probably never evolve.
Just as Notion will never have an offline mode from now on, the foundations of anytype are about to freeze, and I wanted to share with you what I believe will be the death knell of many expectations.
User case : user from Notion, with multiples database. In Notion, each database has its own properties (relations) and pages (objects). In AT, a relation or an object are in AT.
In practice, this poses organizational problems and, with the multiplication of data, will tend to create a big “mess”.
- All relation will be visible everywhere, all the time. If you have 50 databases with dozens of relations (usually specific to the db), you’ll have a list of 500 relationships to manage (add relationship → search the list…). If a relationship has the same name in different places, too bad, the relation list will display the same name several times.
- The same goes for objects and type (the person I spoke to gave me a nice explanation of the problem, but I forgot).
Hence the need to localize data that is of no interest at a global level.

First of all, I want to say that I really like Anytype.
What makes me feel frustrated is that in Anytype, all attachments (images, videos, etc.) seem to be second-class citizens.
They cannot be renamed or managed.
I have just tested Anytype for 1-2 days. I am using OneNote since a few years, Notion and Obsidian since a few months. Here are my dealbreakers in trying to replace any of the 3 applications I use.
- OneNote: I keep text and tables in OneNote. Currently as I understand Anytype cannot do simple tables, only columns or sets/collections. This is a dealbreaker in replacing OneNote.
- Obsidian: I keep text in Obsidian and use the Canvas feature. Currently Anytype cannot do canvas or similar mindmap. This is a dealbreaker in replacing Obsidian.
- Notion: I use Notion only for relational databases. Since, Anytype cannot do this yet, this is a dealbreaker in replacing Notion.
I can understand if Anytype cannot replace all 3 for me. But not being able to replace any one of them is a dealcrusher for me. I think adding relational databases should be easiest for Anytype to implement as it is already part way there.
AT have simple table! And with some cool features.
But in my opinion, it lacks the ability to put images or other blocks in the boxes…

The request is a bit “suspended” because not enough adoptions…
I wouldn’t say that there are any dealbreakers with Anytype but probably one of my biggest dream features that I would like to see implemented if not by the core team but by the community later on is a canvas/whiteboard ability. Along with mind mapping elements to be used with it, I feel like this would help me tremendously as I feel like I process things very spatially.
As well as given that I use Anytype quite a bit for writing I would be able to use it for storyboarding or timeline creation as well.
