Web Clipper

Recently found and loving Omnivore.

Just wanted to share a workaround that I’ve been using for my own needs.
MarkDownload is an extension for chrome and firefox (assuming it works with other chromium browsers too).

That combined with SVG Screenshot and/or image screenshots have done the job for me.

I’m 100% sure that the official Anytype solution would be better, but this has been workable enough to carry me over till then. Hope this helps someone else!

Web Clipper is major tool that allows me to archive content I want to save from the web. I use that on a daily basis.
Currently the best web clipper is Joplin, easily turning webpages into MD notes. (and other options)
The issue with Joplin is that it’s difficult to manage and sort trough all MD notes.
It would be fantastic If Anytype implement this feature.
I created this account just for supporting this feature.
Thank you for making an opensource, privacy respecting alternative to Notion.

Welcome to the Community @bobweb and thanks for the kind words!

Then you’ll be thrilled to find out that this feature is currently in the works, so your wish will become a reality in not too long! I’ve even seen a sneak-peak from our devs ( saw Calendar View recently as well).

I am currently getting familiar using Anytype and I am looking forward trying out the web clipper when it come out.

  • ability to add one bookmark/image/etc to multiple collections/groups/etc (simultaneously)
  • ability to tag and add bookmark/image/etc to multiple collections

Hey, could you explain a bit clearer, what you would like to request. Maybe give some examples etc.?

Yes. So let’s say I want to add a website url I’m currently on to a collection/folder of bookmarks. Instead of just being able to add that url to one collection/folder of bookmarks, I’d like to be able to add it to multiple at the same time.

For example, I may be researching the best tires for cars. Maybe I want to add that URL to a bookmark collection titled ā€œBest Tires for Vehiclesā€ and maybe I also want to add that URL to a bookmark collection titled ā€œMost Sustainable Parts for Green Vehiclesā€.

Some bookmark services don’t allow you to add URLs to more than one collection/folder at a time. I am requesting that Anytype have this type of feature (from the web clipper menu).

The second bullet point is about being able to tag within the web clipper because for example, the Notion web clipper doesn’t have this functionality. And lastly, to be able to add anything through the web clipper/share sheet like images, pdfs, videos, etc. Look to Raindrop for a good example of this…

In terms of overall UI/UX for web clippers, I suppose Evernote, Raindrop, and Diigo are good ones to mimic.

Please check this request:

Yes they are related yet mine is a very specific request that even Evernote is not capable of and very few (if any) web clippers can do…

WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND

  1. Add bookmarks to Anytype from desktop browser with 3 clicks
  2. Ability to add tags from the extention

HOW COULD IT BE DONE

Need to access the bookmark API

REAL WORLD USE CASES

Bookmarks

RECOMMENDED ALTERNATIVES

Currently need to copy paste link to the app which is tedious and timeconsuming

ADDITIONAL CONTEXT

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/notion-web-clipper/knheggckgoiihginacbkhaalnibhilkk This is one of the highly requested features for Notion and a game changer

I don’t understand how that this feature does not exist already event if I must say well done for the work already made on Anytpe. Browser extension imo is essential, or share to app on mobile (wich is a native function I believe).
It may be a quick win that suppress friction.

Is there a way to automate such a process? I don’t believe there’s an api yet or will be?
Thanks.

I love the way that Tyles has built out there user flow for capturing information.

Adding YouTube link here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dh5GXz-N7u4&t=27s

@anyteam, it’s definitely worth it to check out their demo video to get a sense of how fast / easy the capture flow can be. Thanks!

For inspiration, please, take a look at Airtable Web Clipper Extension, it“s amazing Web Clipper Extension - Overview | Airtable Support

So I noticed a current issue (not bug) with bookmark, which should be considered as part of the implementation of web clipper.

Multiple similar links of the same content of mobile site or desktop site or shortcut are not identified as same object, and thus creating multiple objects.
e.g. https://m.youtube.com/ & https://youtu.be/ & https://www.youtube.com

I don’t expect Anytype to detect the minor differences in URL which can vary across sites… but it would be great if there is a object title with same title, prompt / hint users about it, so users can decide for themselves.

In Zotero, there is a function which detect duplicate items and ask users what to do with conflicting fields, then allow merging.

Alternatively, find similar entries and merge, split and refract objects allows users handle duplicate items only when needed.

The ā€˜Save to Notion’ clipper is a great example of this. It allows capture a page and its content in a consistent way to a particular area of your workspace and can interact with relationship fields from within the clipper before sending captured content to Notion.

So I have been thinking about web clipper, together with pdf annotation ← perhaps content clipper is the bases to capturing pdf contents.

One thing Zotero did well is the distinction between the author of text/source or the author of note (aka user). With acknowledgement and copyright in mind, I wouldn’t want to confuse what I write with others’ efforts. What comes from the web did come from the web; thus the author / creator wouldn’t be me. But what I process is mine not others’.

However, I also see multiuser situation where people work as a group would want to know who is inputting what resources for tracing the thinking process and contributions. Another situation is someone who identify the need to read a page but assigning a different person to actually read it.

Two dimensions to solve this (on user end or in software):

  1. Relation dedicated to person capture (rather than object creator) ← but this might add bulk to relation library
  2. Web clipper template

Two different Workflows

  1. Separate objects to distinguish input and note, then view with parallel tabs e.g. tabs for multiple pages ← Good for total distinction but bulky - doubling amount of objects
  2. Embed note block on source object for pinpointing the add-on thought
← My preference and is Good for quick note, clear point-to-point reference, thought composition for multiplayers but require complex note structure, including features like everything is block, indicator for person-content edits

P.S. It is interesting to explore the concept of webpage creator as a hidden multi-player in note taking.

This too is on my ā€œdesperate forā€ list lol. I also use amplenote basically due to their webclipper, it is amazing and worth checking out. Anything similar would be very welcome

This would be such a great addition. Similarly the extension Video Notes to Notion, that captures details from a youtube video for instance; the time stamps, chapters, and creates clickable links to the location of the video right in Notion

Am actually already loving anytype, the fact that its offline first, makes editing notes a breeze. I believe with time using Anytype, one won’t miss Notion.

Hi. Amazingly good web clipper made in the application SiYuan SiYuan - Chrome Web Store GitHub - siyuan-note/siyuan: A privacy-first, self-hosted, fully open source personal knowledge management software, written in typescript and golang.
It works perfectly and copies only the necessary information independently and automatically removing unnecessary data. I personally use it, it’s just a killer feature for them. Please do the same so that the content is copied without unnecessary data.
