Add hotkey to move cursor between blocks

WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND

I want to be able to move my “cursor” around on the canvas using a hotkey + the arrow keys.

Similar to how you now have to use the mouse:

HOW COULD IT BE DONE

  1. Press the hotkey to show the orange line as your cursor between blocks

  2. Use the arrow keys to move the orange cursor around, alternating between selecting a block and then placing a cursor between blocks:
    a. Select block

    b. Use down arrow key to place cursor underneath block

    c. If you press the Return key when on a block, show the quick menu
    d. If you press the Return key when between blocks, insert a new block

  3. Use another hotkey (I suggest the Return key!) to start an action (insert block,

REAL WORLD USE CASES

Get rid of that mouse and use Anytype with the keyboard only!

RECOMMENDED ALTERNATIVES

Use the mouse :frowning:

ADDITIONAL CONTEXT

Closely related to @Oshyan’s request for a hotkey or modifier to switch between block and block content (text) editing.

@sambouwer, hello again) Nice idea, we will handle this one on the next iteration of mouseless interactions polishing. But for now it is a little bit off the priorities, so it is 100% acknowledged but I am not sure how soon it will be implemented

Hi @sambouwer is there any apps you have seen with similar behaviour to use as a reference?

@ignatovv not really, tbh, as I haven’t used other block based editors before. My main comparisons would be Excel (cells, but good keyboard navigation support), Notepad++ (excellent keyboard navigation support), and OneNote (text based, but not really great keyboard navigation support within a page). I’m just quite drawn to the feature request as made by Oshyan (linked in my request) to have a hotkey to switch between editing and navigation.
