This won’t be your regular Town Hall where we just walk through a few new features. We’ve built a whole new experience based on everything we’ve learned over the years.
We’ve teased Editor 2.0. We’ve teased Collections 2.0. Now, we’re ready to show you what we’ve actually been cooking—plus a few surprises that will bring a smile to your face.
If you have any questions you’d like us to cover, please post a comment in this thread and we’ll do our best to get to as many as possible during the Q&A.
Just a basic question: will this be just a preview, a glimpse of what is yet to come, or will this be the real start of a “New Anytype” (with editor 2.0 and collections 2.0)?
It’d be better if we answered that in the Town Hall, because there’s a lot of nuance and I don’t want to set the wrong expectations. So best to wait until the Town Hall for a proper answer, but in the meantime I’ll say: the new editor is functional today and collections 2.0 is functional today—we’re not here to show you mockups or prototypes of what we have planned.

Wait!!! Whaaattttt. You are just dropping bangers this casually.
I can’t keep my excitement in control. See you in the town hall. Love you anytype team
Darn, I have a new job, so unfortunately I won’t be able to join live for the first time.
But I’m really looking forward to hearing what’s new!
Please make the recording available as soon as possible after the event.
I’m in the same boat, but am curious about the Townhall!
My question @kaye is - will the new Anytype have forward and backlinks built in for notes? I’ve been checking out Reflect notes app for that, but I don’t fully understand the security there, whereas with Anytype I feel assured of security. I tried out Obsidian and Bear a few years ago but the learning curve at the time was too steep. I feel like Anytype may be the answer to bridging pkms and notes.
Q for the Townhall:
I would like to hear some words about the team itself.
My impression is that the team has shrunk significantly.
Maybe I’m a bit romantic, but it makes me feel a bit sad when team members I’ve often had conversations with suddenly just disappear.
It was the case for example with @Angelo. I didn’t get an answer to my last PN to him. He was suddenly simply away without a word. @Filip took his job.
Then came @Kaye and after a while, there was nothing to see anymore from Filip.
Same thing with @Razor. Seems that even he’s history. But there was also no information here in the forum.
What about @Charlotte and some others?
Believing that it wouldn’t be appropriate, I don’t dare to ask for the specific reasons. But at least, it would be nice to be told if someone has left (no matter for whatever reason).
Yes, I totally get it. It’s like a small-knit community and when people are gone, it feels like a bit of a loss. The people you’ve referenced are no longer officially with Anytype. To be clear, when people leave the Anytype team, they are more than welcome to share a message with the community (we don’t have any policy prohibiting such a thing)—so it’s been mostly left as a personal decision for individuals. The reasons can be varied as you can imagine: new job, parental leave, startup woes, moving country, performance issues, geo-political turmoil, etc. and it doesn’t make sense on us commenting on such matters on the public internet.
Do you mean two-way (bi-directional) links? Because you can already forward/backlink.
I’m sure the team has lots of exciting news — so much looking forward to the townhall! Can’t wait to hear about the new editor, safe agentic AI integration, or a more intuitive onboarding for newbie users…
What has changed in the development of Anytype and what is the end game goal of Anytype?
It used to be a notetaking app for the individual, now it seems to want to become a MS Teams-like program, focussing on teams/companies
Will Anytype get backlinks view/panel like Logseq, Capacities or Obsidian?
What I mean by that is, you can see, search and filter backlinks including context. For me that has become essential in my note-taking these days.
It never was. It is certainly desirable to understand their current vision, but keep in mind that their original vision (which was mentioned from the very beginning) envisioned an operating environment for the new internet and collaboration was already a part of it.
As @sagaseus has mentioned, our vision was never to build a note-taking app for individuals. If you’d like to learn more about the vision and mission, you can read more on the website:
• Is there any chance we’ll get an option to relocate Objects discussions to a sidebar, rather than having to keep switching back and forth between the body content area and the footer discussions?
• Will we be able to have Discussions as objects, similar to Chats? With the ability to assign properties to them!
• I would have loved to invite lots of people to use Anytype for private and secure conversations, but that would mean getting them to agree to switch to a paid plan at some point, even though Signal itself is free. Anytype could break into this market and become a leading secure messaging app by offering an incentive to sign up for a paid plan if the use of GIFs and other attachments exceeds the free 100 MB quota. Have you considered this approach?
• Any news about implementing TOTP for logins on new devices? Not just email-based OTPs but something more secure and privacy friendly than an email over which the overwhelming majority of people have no control, and access to which can be compromised or even revoked at any time (this has happened to me personally, so I have no trust in centralizing one-time passwords via email).
• Could you allow users to create or move Objects on the fly directly from the GraphView? This would automatically recreate the links and hierarchy between the objects.
Allowing Graph View to function like a mind map, where you can create and modify connections as easily as in mind-mapping software. Making it fully functional rather than purely informational, as is currently the case. Or, by default, a canvas mode like the one offered by Obsidian?
• Could forensic experts be able to recover the data of a specific Object that was deleted locally and then from the bin (i.e., Anysync)? Since the files are stored in some kind of database file, it seems to me that this would be difficult to reconcile with true data deletion (such as cryptographic deletion, for example), but I’m no expert on the topic.
The need is very real because 99% of smartphones are not trusted devices, so border guards in several countries and law enforcement agencies in dictatorships and other so-called democracies make it impossible to safely store our data on smartphones in unfortunate circumstances.
Reading Anytype’s mission (or perhaps this article is more of a vision.. ), I have several things in mind:
First, What is the meaning of “as a tool for trust by building a decentralized layer of trust that supports governance of the positive sum game that the web creates”..?
What does it mean by support governance of web? How decentralised layer can “interact(?)” to become a total sum, instead of localised-only sum in community or individual space?
Second, I wonder how “inter-subjective realities” might exist in Anytype’s software with single source of truth in terms of UI/UX and knowledge/note interactions.
At the current point of Anytype’s development of community sharing space, we have single source of objects and everything is edited on one canvas, with chats and comments being the contributing subjective opinions towards the main editors’ ideas.
This could mean we are doing “interactive objectivity with subjective opinions” instead of “inter-subjective realities”.. If each point is editable by another person, Reality of Person A is overwritten by reality of person B…
The current model depends heavily on users’ commitment to maintain freedom and trust.. to have open space for free ideas and good relationship with other users..
Third, I notice sovereignty is no longer a key highlight in Anytype document.. why is there a change?
I don’t mean to push Anytype to provide answers for the whole picture of Web3, since we are all contributing and internet changes with us.. but since Anytype put these points on mission page, then maybe Anytype have some thoughts?!
P.S. maybe I need to emphasis that I am not writing these to discourage these points…I am curious but also cautious in seeing these..
Generally curious on the state of “On the Horizon” items on the roadmap. Obviously collections/editor will be discussed, and I’m excited about those, but more selfishly I’d love to know about the status of formulas and rollups, and the automated bi directional linking for properties.
Any updates on inline queries/collection parity in the mobile app?
