Using the “Search” shortcut CMD+F to search for text on a page brings up the search bar, but does not remove any text from the previous search query. This is annoying if you are attempting to search for multiple pieces of text within the same object
How To Reproduce It
Open an existing object with any amount of text
Use the “Search” shortcut or go to the Menu bar and click Edit > Search
Search for any text that is on or off the page
Click “Escape” button on keyboard to exit out of Search function
Reopen Search, and you will find the previous search query still present
The Expected Behavior
When the Search function is closed, the search query should also be deleted with it. The search function should be empty when it pops up.

Sometimes it is annoying, yes.
But sometimes it is good so.
I have a better idea:
After reopening the search, the complete term should be marked/selected.
That means, that if you now type something, it becomes deleted and overwritten.
But if you press cursor right or left, the term will be deselected and you can edit it.
I created this because I was comparing the search functionality’s to Notion’s search functionality, which automatically clears on exit. But I think that your solution sounds like it would be the best of both worlds.
Cmd +F or Cmd+S is definitely the way to go to activate the search pane.
But what would be the reasonable keyboard input that is equivalent to the cursor left or right part you suggested for indicating complete or incomplete search?
No, you don’t get it right all the time!
Not using left and right as “selection”. The exact opposite is what I’ve meant. The arrow keys should deselect the already selected string in the search box.
The last used search string inside the search box should already be selected direct after pressing Ctrl + F.
If you now press (for example) “left”, then the string becomes deselected and the cursor stands left beside the string.
There is nothing special here at all.
It’s exactly the same thing as in the editor.
See for yourself:
Select a word.
Now it is selected. What do you do if you suddenly want to edit it?
– You will surely use one of the arrow keys (left or right). See what happens.
What happens is exactly the same what I wish for the search box.
And even better: there is NOTHING to do for the programmers, because everything with the arrow keys and so on is already as it should be!
Yes, really!
– Only one tiny detail is missed: After pressing Ctrl + F the (last used) content in the search box should be selected.
(you could do it manually by pressing Ctrl + A inside the search box)
That’s all what we here speak about!
It’s a less then two minutes job for a programmer do implement it.
Now I understand what you mean; that’s why I ask; conversation needs to keep on, so we and the community can establish common understanding.
What I have in mind was like swiping left or right on mobile, e.g. swipe right on email app to archive an email. We would mimic this type of left and right to indicate finished search… That’s why I was asking for the keyboard operation.
P.S. No need to be angry and I, as a human, absolutely don’t get everything right every time.
Thanks, I’m not angry and I’m very sorry if you’ve had the impression.
Written text can’t transport the writers emotion, also I’m not writing in my mother language, what’s why I often can’t find the best words for expressing what I want to express.
I was only strong astonished/confused about what you wrote and why you didn’t get it. But there was no angry emotion at all.
Please excuse me if I didn’t express it in a good way or if it didn’t sound nice.
