I am consistently having a problem when entering my vault and creating new ones. It always some kind of a bug and I’m seriously sick of it. I cant get to my notes when I need them and I’m loosing trust of the security of my data, that it won’t be lost.
I’d like to have an option whether to encrypt it or not as well as should I have a security key to enter. As for my workflow - I don’t need security key at all. As well as incryption to be honest. All I need is to open Anytype and work. But not I’m stuck for indefinite amount of time: reloading my pc, changing the folder for my vaults, trying to open the other one with a key and failing, trying to create a new one but once again failing because the key is not generating.
There are just too much now… There is no need of such high level of security cause it’s making it easy for bugs to appear, it’s not okay if I can’t even open the app!
For most users a custom password would be enough
WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND?
Simple vault organization and storage. It is now too complicated, to minimize the effect of bugs you should consider something more simple like as I described. Data access is more important than such high level of security that is desired by only small percentage of users.
REAL WORLD USE CASES
Obsidian is a good example. I have never had any problems with my vaults. I was always sure my data was secured, I cloud move my vaults wherever I liked and even to other devises manually.
And by the way Anytype has several bugs with internet connection, like sometimes I cant open it if is offline, and I still somehow had “free backup storage” of my files even though I choose local-only which leaves me questioning where the hell is my data actually is… With Obsidian I was sure it’s in my hands, and I could easily open/delete/create vault without a single bug for years.
Sorry but looks like the beginning of your problems is moving the data folder around and stuff.
I feel my data safe thanks to anytype being source available and local first. If tomorrow anytype servers explode I will keep having everything on my machine and I will just need to export everything.
If you prefer the obsidian way and it’s a dealbreaker for you, it’s probably better to use it because going to a file first architecture probably won’t be done nowhere soon (maybe never)
Bugs can indeed be frustrating; however your request is probably going to tag as improbable if the idea is against the basic rationale and infrastructure behind Anytype…but UI/UX suggestions are probably welcomed.
On your current situation though, if you provide more information on the exact problems you are facing, we might be able to help you resolve it more quickly.
For now, some general information which might or might not help:
on storage and backup, there should be no syncing to Anytype nodes when you are local-only. You might see that you have free storage space because you are entitled to that. It doesn’t mean you are using it. However, if you have used AnySync before, the remote storage information will still show you the data you previously synced to Anytype backup node. Here are some information on data privacy and security.
On P2P connection, which is different to internet connection, it will depend on your local network, which can be as simple as wired connection with data transfer cables, and as sophisticated as you want in self-hosting.
As for Obsidian, the target users are likely to be different. Obsidian’s rationale is after all quick and ownership. Here in the community, privacy and security are probably one of the most concerned topics. Some users even consider their own device or themselves unsafe, in case of being hacked or robbed. Community still asks Anytype to have more security measurements, while data security is completely on users’ own hands in Obsidian.
Anytype is great, I really like the way it works, it is what I have searched for a while so I’ll still probably going to choose it over Obsidian in most cases.
I understand that security really matters, but the thing that confuses me is that sometimes I have troubles with it both on my pc and in the iphone.
For example, now I have different information about its connection on my iphone. And I don’t know which one is true
The connection indication is grey when I’m editing a page( if I click there is says local only), but when I go to my spaces, it’s green and shows “active” status near my vault name, tho I still don’t have any network id, but now I’m confused why it is all like that. (If you’d answered this I would appreciate because I was thinking to ask about this in help topic)
Also the security key not always passes, sometimes I have to reload the pc to enter, and as for my iphone the key is not even generating at all, it shows only blurred screen and now I’m afraid to log out, what if I’ll never can log in back
Those tiny things make me afraid I will eventually loose all my data because I can’t really control the excess to it. So as for me I’d prefer to have a choice - to have a security key or to enter just like that, with no additional things when creating a vault or at least be able to set my own password or maybe be able to restore it.( For example Telegram has an option to set up a password for double authentication of your account and you can connect your mail to be able to restore it, or you can choose not to do it and rely only on yourself)
Anyway, I’m only starting to use Anytype in my routine, so maybe I’ll find some workaround and understand better how to make it all work for me.
I don’t mean I’d prefer it like Obsidian it is just an example of more “simplicity”. I just liked some small things about it, and how easy and fast it was to enter a vault.
Currently I have some setbacks in accessing and setting the connection in Anytype and it just bothers me, cause I’m afraid to loose my data or to be not local-only when I think I am…
