I am Building my Homebrew DnD-Campaign in Anytype

and i am having a blast. I used to use Obsidian (which is great) but with Anytype it just flows. I am really excited to have my first playtest with it. There is so much missing yet, but i am looking forward to build the rest.

Woohoo! Would love to know how you structured your characters, locations, etc.

I think there are quite a few people who use Anytype for DnD.

I created Types like npc, faction, location, etc and used properties to link an npc to a location for example

This encourages me to share my TTRPG template that I’ve been holding on to for quite some time! I’ve been meaning to contribute to the gallery at some point.

I’m wondering, would it make sense to use some sort of transcription software that captures the dialog from the DnD sessions, then somehow also log that into your Anytype campaigns, characters, and story progression? Because Anytype also has chats with objects, each person in the space could even be a character.

I’ve only ever played a couple of sessions of DnD, so I’m no expert. But it seems to make sense in my head. Each space can be a different story/campaign.

this seems like a great idea

I love this idea, it sounds super cool to capture dialog and use AI summaries to track it. Unfortunately I don’t think I could get my players on board to record the sessions (we get way off track and I’d have to cut out SO much random side chatter about other stuff, e.g., Love Island).

I do really want to get them on board to use AT in the long term though! Here are some thoughts I’ve had while building this out for my own personal use, and eventual shared use :crossed_fingers::

  • Tabs has already helped me SO much in-session. I always have my NPCs tab, Locations tab, Sessions Notes tab, Factions tab, and Quick Reference tab open. It was rough having five AT windows all the time previously

  • We currently use Discord which works for us e.g., scheduling channel and on-topic channel. My group isn’t rowdy so I don’t really need chat moderation (I know it’s also on the horizon). If we end up sharing a space for a campaign though, it would be useful for me to have my own game master notes section/pages/type that they would not be able to view. Not sure if this would be part of role management, or maybe permissions? For now, I publish objects whenever I want to share them, which is a pain to do on an individual level.

  • It would be cool to have a shared summary with the players and the ability to add comments for things the players want to revisit (also on the horizon)

  • We’ve been through a few different campaigns now, which is why I created the feature request Add ability to move spaces / channels into folders

  • Also just throwing out iOS tablet support as well because one of my players takes notes on his iPad

You’d definitely want the recording solution to be something that’s local or private, then you can get AI to clean up everything not related to the DnD session. Then you could summarise the session and then keep a kind of story/journal/log of the campaign.

  1. Glad you like tabs, I do too.
  2. Having objects in a space that only you can see (and none of the other members) is not on the horizon anytime soon—it’s very complicated on infra. However, you could have all your game master notes in your private space, and then create a link to it in the campaign space. This means you can easily reference it while in the space (open in a new tab or whatever), but it won’t literally exist in that space. Not a perfect solution, but gets the job done.
  3. Yep, object discussions are on the way. So if you had a story summary or something, then all the players could then discuss/add comments.
  4. Space management is something that’s in exploration—not happening anytime soon but we do believe it’s necessary.
  5. Yes, we will also be putting in tablet support. If I’m not mistaken, Android will have it in the next 2 months and iOS after that.

Sounds like you’ll have pretty much all you need for some dope DnD sessions.

This makes sense that it would be a complicated solution. I’ll probably do something like this so that the session notes are editable to my players too.

I’m glad to know that a lot of this stuff is already being thought about; it’s cool to know that you’re getting enough similar feedback to prioritize these things!
