Anytype Desktop 0.56.0 — It's Fast

Sorry to hear that this recent release didn’t meet your expectations and that we’re not delivering fast enough. @Hexara

I hope you’ll at least join the latest Town Hall to hear what we have to share, I think it’ll be worth your while, even if you’ve already moved to Obsidian.

Note: I’m a little surprised that this release was viewed as a ‘chat-related’ release, one of the biggest deliveries was kanban on mobile (among many other non-chat related features).

Is it any time soon?

I meant Desktop-wise.

If all goes according to plan, we’ll know if we can host it on EOD Mon. Then it’d be that week.

It’s a big one, which is why there’s a lot of juggling and things needing to line up before we host it. We’re 100% aware that it’s been delayed (and the roadmap hasn’t been updated), which doesn’t inspire confidence. But hopefully it’ll make sense soon. As Sturdily mentioned, rebuilding editor and collections 2.0 from scratch, which inevitably is a huge rebuild of the fundamental PKM aspects of the product. Certain bugs have not been addressed because they are/will be non-existent in the new build.

Now I’m interested, let’s see how it goes!

You just raised my curiosity to the top!

No offence. Just check the vote rank in the "feature Request“. some of them are there more than 3 years…
But I did not know the editor 2.0, thank you for pointing it out.

Some more external delays unfortunately, but I’ll update again once I can firm it up. Apologies again.

Yes, we’ve mentioned in a few town halls that many bugs exists and new features are blocked due to a very old editor (oldest part of Anytype). In order to address many of thing all at once, we need to rebuild the editor from scratch—which has been a core undertaking.

You know they’re cooking something good when they keep delaying the town hall meeting.

@kaye I’m curious, what’s the most likely timeframe for Editor 2.0 to officially launch? Is it around next month, the next quarter, or perhaps next year?

New anytype updates are always welcome but I don’t understand why is there not a faster release schedule for bug fixes. I am stuck with the same bugs for over 3-4 months now. Editor bugs. Undo redo is broken. Forward backward navigation is broken. Works only when you input commands slowly. Copy and paste doesnt work half the time.

Am i the only person experiencing these?

I understands anytype is p2p e2ee like whatsapp, but these are basic editor state management bugs. Why is the team prioritizing making chats faster over making sure users dont lose progress on undo.

I have read elsewhere that known bugs are not being solved because we’ll soon™ receive the Editor 2.0 update which won’t have them, as it will be a complete overhaul of the editor system (editor is the oldest AnyType component if I remember correctly).

The team does put out minor releases with bug fixes more often than feature additions, though I do concur there are some very annoying bugs which have been present since the start and have still not been solved, (in my experience on Android more so than desktop).

I also concur that AnyType seems strangely unstable at “fast speeds”. Deleting words, selecting text via keyboard, pressing enter, writing, if these operations are executed in a fast manner you’ll end up with a mess, it’s like AT can’t properly track which command was executed before another.

I hope Editor 2.0 will fix these issue without introducing too many regressions.

I have been consistently answering to the survey by asking for bug fixes over feature additions, as I believe AT already has many solid usecases that are hindered by annoying bugs and poor usability. However survey results remain evenly split between additions and fixes, there must be lots of users who are OK with these issues.

I remain hopeful as they are pioneering a field while tackling a lot of new problems, but I do wish feature stability was given more priority, since building new features on buggy foundations usually leads to much more difficult fixes down the line.

Is it safe to assume you have a conflict with your investors?

Just wanted to note that the 0.56.4 update today has made new tab opening almost instantaneous. A big surprise indeed coming from a minor point release!
