Anytype Desktop 0.55.0 – Let’s Discuss

In my opinion, only a few users don’t use used to hierarchical folders/files.
You’re entitled to your own opinion, and I respect that. Just don’t make it sound like it applies to everyone.

A friend is considering using Anytype to store a lot of stuff, to the point where the 100GB plan might not be enough. If she ends up with gigabytes of data that are duplicated, tripled, or “lost” because they’re marked as deleted, that won’t fly. Yes, she uses Notion, where deleting a page also deletes its child elements. In fact, she “sold” it to her company, so I don’t think this type of user should be overlooked.

Yeah, I wanted to strike it through and write “save space” next to it, but I always struggle to figure out how to strike it through, so I forgot… my bad. I edited it, struck it through, and added a smiley face so it would be clearer to you that it was just a joke.

If I create a note in (Evernote|Notion|Google Keep|Affine|…) and add an image to it, when I delete the note, the image is also deleted.

Since you’re using Obsidian as an example, it does the same thing, with the well-known confirmation prompt mentioned above for Anytype. So do you think Obsidian works poorly, since you don’t seem to like that feature?

Should we continue along these lines, acknowledging that these are just our personal opinions, and that every user has their own way of doing things, their own experiences, and their own expectations regarding Anytype?

Fair, general assumption I did, may not be true at all.

Then implement a GC. Can also do like Nixos, can also do a find duplicates and consolidate them. This is the proper solution, a “deduplicater” would do wonders. (why duplication if the same file can be in lots of notes through links?)

yes  but that enabled me to land the landmines on planet Anytype joke

I reply with quoting myself:

and the reason why this is “understandable” on Obsidian:

Obsidian is folders/files, not a network graph.

But there is a reason that Obsidian asks for a confirmation, and does not do it silently and assume it is what the user wants.

Anyway… like I said, I trust that Anytype will do the right thing, even if it does the wrong one first.

That is why I mentioned also the “Delete” and “Delete and cleanup” or confirmation box with list, similar to Obsidian or filemanagers. I am not invalidating your usecase or @kaye 's (if you are reading it as that, then I am not, I do understand what you want). What I am saying is, delete (regular delete) is deterministic and there should not be anything “smart” to it. You do not mess with Delete!

Although, in my opinion, and this is yes my opinion, the best solution is a space level, robust, deduplicator Garbage Collection system.

Love it. That echoes my suggestion above that there be a built-in place where you can see all orphaned objects (which I’ve made myself via Query).

Haven’t got time to test out most of features yet but a quick feedback:

While I appreciate team for allowing us to be clear which block is in action, by highlight it with blue colour…

The block selection demonstration is a little annoying, specially for inline collection. As you can see in the video, it only highlight partially. When I am trying to work on one object within inline collection, it highlights the whole collection block. This confuses me which position on the canvas I am working on.

It takes a bit of work to deselect (aka to unhighlight) the block by keyboard moving to an empty or text block. It would be nice to deselect where mouse click is done on empty space.

  • When block selection is demonstrating CollectionB, clicking on CollectionA doesn’t deselect or reselect CollectionA as the active block.
  • For example, my dashboard is full of inline queries/collections. I have to scroll or cursor down to the very bottom.

Maybe it would be better if the highlight colour is lighter, or it is the action button (the ⋯ button) is highlighted and permanently shown when block is active, instead of the whole block being highlighted.

For this, it would be cool to have an attribute for collections like directory or folder that you can switch on or off.

Like this, you give the option if the collection should behave like a folder or not. And the most important: people would know about it.

This would be awesome.

This is objectively incorrect. I’ve created notes within a collection, tagged it to something else, then unlinked it from that collection and watched it get erased, not get put into the bin, erased like it never existed. I already have a bug report about it, not that it matters because this makes Anytype 100% nonfunctional for my use because loss of data isn’t acceptable under any circumstance for what I’m doing. Good luck in your travels.

Can we have this as an option: Close/Keep-Open ?

I am saying so because I mostly work with long-documents in Anytype, and having ToC visible all the time (v0.54.11 behavior) is optimal for this workflow.

Having to re-open ToC every time a new document is opened is troublesome for users who has many long-documents, where it is essential for in-document navigation.

So, I would request you to make it an option for users to keep ToC open in the right-sidebar permanently.

Thanks.

Hum… Can you try to help debug this?
I get the same behavior, but it goes into the Bin, it does not get erased permanently.

While I’m still here I can tell you what you want to know, but I’m already planning to move to ZK as it’s going to be more appropriate for my use.

This is my bug report, not sure what else to tell you, when I unlink a note from a collection it completely 100% disappears.

It’s true—objects are indeed being deleted.

I will repeat what I said above: any linked or cascade deletions that are not triggered directly by clicking a “DELETE THIS SPECIFIC OBJECT AND NOTHING ELSE” button must be purged from the code at the conceptual level. This is fundamentally unacceptable, whether we are talking about a knowledge base, a note-taker, or a simple archive.

I couldn’t care less if someone finds it “inconvenient” to select all objects with Ctrl+A to delete them before removing a collection. And I certainly shouldn’t have to care about what attributes are assigned to an object depending on how it was created.

I am absolutely livid that the team has planted these “landmines” and expects us to just learn how not to blow ourselves up. This approach deserves neither trust nor understanding!

This new color palette needs a little bit contrast for the Select type property, I see Yellow, Orange and Red almost identical with a 99% sRGB monitor. Same goes for Blue, Cyan and Green.

On the other hand, Multi-select type property colors are way more distinguishable. And I actually like them more than before.

As for the main point, Discussions, it’s fantastic even for a single user, it acts as a thought area for dumping ideas/issues or whatever the user has to do with that object, one thing I don’t like, the fact that the discussion shows below the object contents, if it was to be in the right side bar or any separate area so that I can discuss on my object and see its content at the same time, i.e without having to scroll up everytime I have to see the object’s content while discussing/chatting.

Hi all! Moving the cascade-deletion discussion to a dedicated thread so it has its own home, the hotfix shipping today, and the redesign plan:

Continuing replies there. Thanks again for the pushback!

Like this new feature. It’s simple but I didn’t know how much I miss it from Notion. I just need to keep a couple of pages in favorites that I go too often but don’t need to be opened all the time in tabs. Favorites makes it way easier to navigate to them.

I love these small quality of life changes. They really add up in day-to-day use. I don’t use tables often but when I do, I need them responsive and easy to use.

I was pleasantly surprised that that table format is recognized when pasting as a plain text in Anytype. Unfortunately, simple pasting doesn’t work but as long as pasting as plain text works I’m good. Saves me so much headache migrating my notes.

There are a couple of things that can improve tables even further:

  • Allow for click and drag for selecting multiple cells. Hotkeys are very helpful but click and drag is more natural gesture for selection.
  • Allow for columns to be headers too.
  • It would be nice if Anytype would recognize when multiple rows or columns selected and if choose to delete it would delete all the selected columns and not only then one you opened the menu from. Otherwise, you have to delete multiple rows/columns one-by-one which can be quite tedious.

Tabs stability improved significantly since last version. I barely could use them. Saw all kind of bugs. Now it seems to work way better. Thank you! I really on tabs so much in my daily workflow. Can’t live without them.

Quite pleased to see this feature making a come back (I get that this is more, since it also includes the personal aspect). I often find myself curating a small list of objects I will work on and I missed the “star” button dearly.

Now, it may already have been brought up, but at the moment, you can’t place the Favorites widget at the top (or at least in a prominent place) of the sidebar. If it’s tucked away far, it cannot do its job.

I trust that you already have this on your radar.

Came here to report the same issue. It’s impossible to place the favorites on top, exactly where they’re needed.

That’s a great update!

I was waiting some changes for a long time: concerning file upload, tables, Unicode sequence replacements etc.

In my opinion, the only blot on the landscape is “Start a discussion” button at the bottom of each object which is quite irrelevant for personal spaces/channels.

Not necessarily. Personally, I find it helpful even in private spaces for logging metadata, such as change logs or rationales, without cluttering the main body of the document.

I apologize, I haven’t read all responses to this post so I hope I’m not repeating something that was already shared, but in my opinion:

  1. It’s unreasonable to expect users to remember where they created an object (from scratch or from inside another object).
  2. Even if the source of the creation is specified somewhere, it will add a lot of unnecessary complexity and confusion (at a time where Anytype is going strong on simplification).
  3. I think adding hierarchy would also add complexity and run counter to Anytype’s core ethos
  4. This entire thing can be resolved with an easy flow (the logic seems complex but to the user it will look and feel very simple and easy to understand because it’s just one additional modal):

Given Object A inside Object B,

If Object A has no backlink to any object other than Object B,

When user deletes Object B,

Then Anytype shows a modal notifying the user that Object A will become orphaned and ask whether the user wants to delete Object A at the same time as deleting Object B.

Hi Anytype,

I’ve upgraded my Anytype linux client and noticed that I’m missing sync status icon above notes. I can see in Channel toggle bar “Sync status” but that dot visible on top of note is gone.

Haven’t found any details about that thus wanted to confirm - was it removed?

Sync status has been moved to the be next your vault in the latest version (where your profile photo is), but we’ve received feedback that it’s hard to find and unintuitive, so we’ve made a note to revisit this.
