A new file system for media and files within anytype

WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND

I was wondering the other day how would anytype store the media files uploaded from the hard drive. I thought it would be a good idea if anytype wouldn’t create a duplicate from them because that would take up so much space; instead it would be a good idea to use shortcuts/aliases instead.

HOW COULD IT BE DONE

I’m probably not qualified to talk about the technical details but I thought when the user drags and drop or upload something in Anytype, then Anytype can create an alias in Mac or a shortcut in windows linking to the original file and place that alias/shortcut in the Anytype working directory itself.

REAL WORLD USE CASES

It doesn’t have a separate use case than the one that is currently in use, but this way we wouldn’t have duplicate files cluttering our hard drive.

ADDITIONAL CONTEXT

This is the problem with the “folder structure” file system. I myself try to create aliases for myself when I think one file should be in two different folders on my hard drive.

The same answer as here

For now anytype copies objet inside working directory. We have a project in our rnd for so called “work with file system” to use symlinks instead of copies of the files to be in sync with file system.

I am not sure we will manage to do this before release but we are really looking forward to introduce it.
