Will Excalidraw come back?

the integration with excalidraw was quite useful and I used it a lot, I wonder if it will come back soon or there are no plans for this yet.

The issue is that it’s difficult to diagnose the syncing/overheating issues that Anytype experienced with it since it’s a third-party application embed. So we can’t promise anything on the timeline, however some users have been creating their own mini apps (which is an experimental feature) to build their own canvas tool. It seems to have some success, but we must say that you try at your own risk.

Or this may be the right time to build the native whiteboard?

How to access this experimental resource? I couldn’t find much information about

It was released as part of the AI Ally (Mini Apps). Some testers have been creating mini apps and sharing with the community in the Anytype Community Chat.

Absolutely, I hate being given hope with Excalidraw and now it’s gone.

Whiteboard coming to Anytype (among some other things like formulas) will literally crush some other apps they would have near zero chance to survive

I migrated to Anytype from Notion. And most of the reason for that was this excalidraw whiteboard feature. And its gone now. I was the one who reported an issue related to Excalidraw’s theme misbehaving Misbehaving Excalidraw · Issue #2190 · anyproto/anytype-ts · GitHub And things have taken a worse turn from there. I wasn’t expecting it to be disabled completely. That give up was way too fast. There is obsidian excalidraw plugin which saves the drawing data in json text block, Couldn’t it be replicated in anytype? Will it still cause syncing issue that way?

I really think core note-taking functionalities + P2P syncing + object-oriented approach are already a good combination to outperform other software. Whiteboard should be one of those functionalities.

Implementing Excalidraw was a quick stop-gap solution that, at the time, required relatively minimal development resources. But it obviously isn’t a great solution in the long-run because it doesn’t allow for interaction with native objects, etc. After users put Excalidraw embeds into a Community Chat with 1000+ members, this is when it noticeably caused a lot of syncing, crashing, and overheating issues. Spending more resources to diagnose and resolve issues with a third-party solution (that isn’t great in the first place) is a tough sell when we have many other priorities.

So developing a native whiteboard solution is the goal in the long run, rather than trying to optimise Excalidraw. I know this isn’t a ‘nice answer’ to hear, but that’s the current state of affairs. We may change our mind in the future.

Out of curiosity, I did a tiny bit of research. It seems that there is no widely accepted universal format for storing stroke ink. There are many different solutions.
