Toggle-able Description for Properties

WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND?

Add the ability to describe an object’s properties when viewing it in tables.

HOW COULD IT BE DONE?

Notion already has this feature. It could be implemented as an option in the same pop-up menu as other property-related actions. It could just be a small description that shows upon hover on desktop. I’m not sure what the configuration would be best for mobile.

REAL WORLD USE CASES

I have ADHD and personally struggle with remembering exactly the purpose or necessity of descriptive properties of the large collections of info I store in AnyType. This feature could also help collaborative channels reduce friction and confusion when creating pages and adding/updating information.

RECOMMENDED ALTERNATIVES

I’ve tried keeping a key or noting the parameters of object properties on another page or program.

ADDITIONAL CONTEXT

I know it’s a small thing, and most people can keep up with the reason they created their system the way they do, but I think it could be helpful for people like me who are trying to accommodate their ADHD with a second-brain approach but struggle to be consistent when coming back to their life organization system.

This would be a nice touch, especially for shared spaces where other people add data. Until something like it exists, one workaround is to build the guidance into the Type’s template: put a short “How to fill this in” block at the top of the template (a callout works well) that lists each property and what it’s for, so it appears on every new object of that type. Another option is to keep a single “Schema guide” object with a line per property and pin it in the sidebar or link it from the Type page. Choosing very explicit property names, like “Review by (date)” instead of just “Date”, also removes a lot of the guesswork when you come back to a collection later. If you’d like hover descriptions on properties, adding your vote to this request is the best way to get it noticed.
