Show creation timestamp for individual text blocks

I’ve been using Anytype for a while, and one thing I’m still missing is the ability to see when an individual text block was written.

I often use a Page as an inbox / journal / stream of thoughts. I continuously add paragraphs to the same page over days, weeks, or months.

Right now, when I return to that page, I can see what I wrote, but I have no way to know when I wrote each paragraph.

The creation date of the Page itself does not solve this, because one Page can contain hundreds of entries created at completely different times.

What I would like:

Each text block should keep its creation timestamp and make it possible to display it, for example:

22:34 Today I trained...

It does not need to be permanently visible. A timestamp shown on hover, in the block menu, or through an optional “Show timestamps” setting would be enough.

Ideally:

  • every block automatically stores its creation date and time;
  • the timestamp can be viewed without manually entering it;
  • timestamps can optionally stay hidden to keep Pages visually clean.

This is especially important for inboxes, journals, logs, research notes, and long-running project pages.

For me this is not just a cosmetic feature. Knowing when I wrote something gives the note important context. After using Anytype for a long time, I now have many pages where the chronological context of individual entries is effectively lost.

Chats already have the concept of individual messages and timestamps. I would like ordinary Page blocks to expose similar temporal information without having to turn my notes into chats or separate objects.

Funnily enough, we know people using chat—sending messages to self—to do exactly this. Some people are also using the discussions feature for this.

What you could do today is to use the @Today command every time you start writing something. This will give you a visual indicator and you can click on that date to view things related to that date.

If many others see the need for timestamp creation on a per-block level, then we can think about it. But it sounds very messy and not really solving for many use cases.

Well, in a sense, the information when and by whom a block was edited last should be available in the object’s version history — and indeed I’ve sometimes scrolled through history to exactly find that out.

I imagine it could be great to show a block’s last time stamp and user from version history, when opening the block’s menu, maybe in an info window together with more information like word count, char count, and linking objects.
