Your reply will certainly give Anyteam some new ideas for LLM. Espcially supermemory, I think it’s awesome how it works and would love to see something like that in Anytype; I just don’t think now is the time to dedicate time and resources to it. It’ll be nicer to only focus on LLM once out of beta, where the app is much more stable with more of the basic features in place. That is what would give people confidence to import all their notes into Anytype. Only after Anytype can convince more people to migrate fully to Anytype would LLM work amazingly, but not before that.
Regarding copying competition, I see where you’re coming from, I agree somewhat but not fully. The features I listed previously are more like fundamental features. Canvas was just an example, even though I think it’ll be nice to have in the future to; definitely not something soon along with LLM. I don’t see copying competition as a bad thing, just copy the best part about the competition if it fits Anytype, and leave out the rest. Reinventing something that already works well can benefit the brand, but most of the time it doesn’t. An example would be what I wrote in the Tabs feature request about what I think is Arc browser’s failed attempt to be innovative and reinvent how we use tabs by making them close by itself after a certain period of time.
They didn’t reinvent browser profiles; browser profiles already exist before Arc and Arc just made it more accessible. They didn’t reinvent tabs in a side bar, Vivaldi already have that. But these two are examples of Arc taking something that already exist that people love and putting it in their browser, making the feature better and more easily used – just like how you describe supermemory, it’s LLM just enhanced and doing what people want it to do with less obstacles to get there. When Arc try to force a new thing like auto archiving tabs to everyone just for the sake of innovation, it backfires. I still use Arc, and many people do because it a great browser; but I’m almost certain that nobody migrated to Arc because of their auto archiving feature. In fact, I think Arc can get rid of auto archiving and most people wouldn’t even be mad (most will even be glad they did), but I doubt they would as explained in the other topic linked.
So yeah, copy what’s great and works already, and make those better/more accessible. Be wary of reinventing just for the sake of being innovative, it can work (like Notion introducing blocks to note taking, Anytype building local only E2EE notes with syncing abilities), and it can also backfire (like Arc’s auto archiving tabs that nobody talks fondly about). Also, being too different in too many places by reinventing everything will dilute the brand; Anytype’s brand is offline local P2P sync E2EE, before they can sell themselves phenomenally with this (they already can, just need the other fundamentals features in place), I think it’ll hurt the brand by branching out by being different in too many areas so quickly. Think of the big brands you know, H&M is 95% the same as Uniqlo, just the style is different. Microsoft Office is 95% the same as Libre Office, just that Libre is FOSS. Pizza Hut is 99% the same as Dominos Pizza. When you think of branding, being innovative in too many areas at the same time dilutes the brand.
To bring it back to the LLM topic, supermemory is cool, and it’ll definitely be awesome to see something like that in Anytype, thanks @ThiccNippls for bringing that up. Just that there are more important things to focus on at the moment, not LLM. I don’t know how I feel that knowing that it’s already in the roadmap.
