WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND
Search objects, object types, or relations through a search bar system-wide. (even more, objects could be preview through the search bar).
Quick add a new object through the search bar.
HOW COULD IT BE DONE
There are two ways to implement this in my mind.
- Base on platforms like Alfred or Raycast.
- Build a system-wide search bar which can be called by shortcut system-wide specifically for Anytype.
The 1st approach is relatively easier. However, consider Anytype is a cross platform application, and the different os have different tools (Alfred for Mac, Powertoy Run for Windows, *** for Linux), it is also higher work load than the 2nd approach to maintain the extensions for different os. Also, even users using same os may have different quick access tool installed (Mac users may choose Spotlight, Alfred or Raycast).
The 2nd approach will be more complicated when first time implement it. However, since it is a built-in feature, it should be able to used across os like the main application of Anytype. So, it will be one application to maintain for all os. Also, this approach has more flexibility to achieve more useful functionalities compared with the 1st approach since it does not rely on a third-party application.
I believe some of the logics for this system-wide search bar can also be used to enhance the in-app search bar.
REAL WORLD USE CASES
Search note from system-wide for quick access users’ knowledge base and notes, for example:
- a user should be able to quickly find a note he/she prepared for today’s meeting when they are in the meeting application by search through the search bar.
- a user should be able to quickly find a project he/she has done as reference for their on-going project by search/filtering the relations.
- etc.
