It's a pain to rename pictures in the Gallery View if you have lots of objects loaded

What’s The Bug?

If you rename pictures in the Gallery View of a Set for pics, you have to wait about two seconds after each single character you type.
My Set has about 300 pics and is sorted for “Last modified date”.

The problem seems to be, that Anytype renews something in all Objects that use the actual pic, and that it also renews the sorting after each single character.
All that costs time.

The solution would be that Anytype does all these things only if the editing is finish.

How To Reproduce It

  1. Open a Set for pictures in Gallery View.
  2. Rename a pic. Try to type in normal speed (that means: fast speed). Strange things will happen.
You need to type veeeery slooooow to avoid the strange things.

The Expected Behavior

I want to type in normal (fast) speed.
I don’t want to wait two seconds after each single character.

Made with the brand new v0.42.33-beta:

Renaming a pic

For unknown reason it’s not as extremely slow as yesterday, but you see the strange effects if I type too “fast”.

The cursor jumps, part of my typed name becomes deleted, out from another world appears some text fragments I didn’t type …

How many items do you have loaded in the gallery? I tried to reproduce this yesterday but my gallery was small.

60 pics minimum.
The effect becomes worse if I click on “Show 60 more Objects”.

As written in the start post, I have about 300 pics in this Set.
Yesterday I have clicked multiple times on “Show 60 more Objects”.
The more Objects are shown, the bigger the problem becomes.

Ok, got it, thanks.

This report has been added to our issue tracker and received by the Development Team.

thanks for opening this issue. Another strange thing is:

  • the preview pictures are loading very slow in the thumbnails
  • As long as the pictures are loading you can open any card and the picture will not be shown in the opened object… even if it was already visible in the thumbnails
  • as soon as all the thumbnails are loaded in the background the image in the opened object will appear
  • until then the opened object looks like this:

→ no picture under the block handler appears

Do you also have lots of objects in the view? And does this happen every time you open the view?

I made a gallery in a set from all my pictures in Anytype which are now around 1630…

The first few times when I hit “Show 60 more Objects” the objects load very fast. After 1-3 times it then starts to get really slow and the behaviour mentioned above starts.

Update:
When I make a list view I can not see the pictures at all when I open an object. Maybe because it is loading so long in the background?

Update 2:
The same thing happens when I scroll down all the way in the new “All Objects” Widget in the “Media” Tab. It seems that Anytype wants to preload a certain amount of pictures in the background before it fully loads the opened object.

Once everything (or a certain amount of objects) is loaded in the background it works smoothly again from my point of view.

Create a separate report for this pls as another team might be responsible.

It’s now much better in v0.42.38-beta
But the effect still exists. Not only while typing fast, but also if one deletes multiple characters in a fast way.

Can you please describe view settings, I have the same view but do not see any problems with performance. Do you have sort by name for example?

There is no filter for this View.
And it is sorted by Last modified date (descending).

It happens also if I sort for name.

I see the effect mostly if there is text right from the cursor and I hit the delete key multiple times.

There are 180 pics visible at the moment.

Got it, thanks. It’s the update that affects the performance. As temporary solution remove the sort.

Yeah, that helps.

Meanwhile I have experienced the issue also for a pic that’s embedded in a Page.
If I right click in the Page on the picture and open it as Object to edit it’s name, the same effects happen.
I needed about six tries to get the name correctly edited.

… But these effects don’t happen always: when I started my screen recorder to document the problem, it suddenly worked without a flaw. :-/
I tried it even with a completely new picture in the same Page, but it still didn’t happen again.

But we can conclude that in case of a Page the sorting of a Set can’t be the problem, right?
Or does maybe the sorting work in background?
Because a pic that’s pasted into a Page appears also in the Set for pictures (and I have there the sorting on again).

No it must be a different problem but I do not know which one yet, you can at least make a video of the flow so I can think of how it can be affected by updates.

I made different tests in this video.

  • Sometimes there are lags.
  • Sometimes appear characters out of nowhere although I hammer on the delete key or backspace.

I have seen much worse effects then here, but I think you see that here’s something weird.

Thanks, requires investigation.
