Community Experiment: launching the Local-First Lovers Club

Hi, everyone!

We are experimenting with new formats and use-cases of Anytype platform. With these small experiments we are trying to expand our general understanding of what else Anytype can be useful for and (possibly) prioritize some new features in future versions.

We created a special Space with unlimited editors and invite you to join us on this journey by clicking this invite link: https://invite.any.coop/bafybeib3eh3aowv24v5rv4japcrgqw4ly7fx3h4lca2vbh3kqdy7hasoxe#29SnvBDxo83r5MooE2FdSa6wPmwJKxLkuZEinqfvoCKt

What is the Local-First Lovers Club?

The Local-First Lovers Club is our first test community on Anytype. Its goal is to aggregate all useful knowledge on the subject of local-first apps, data ownership, decentralized collaboration, peer-to-peer systems, encryption, CRDTs, webassembly and more.

We are here to:

  • Aggregate Knowledge. We have started to fill out our Wiki structure and need your help with finding new apps, libraries, good articles and videos. Let this become our common collaborative knowledge base!
  • Test Technical Feasibility. It will be interesting to see how community building fits into Anytype’s ideology. And how long it can survive
  • Gather Feedback. With this kind of “dogfooding”, we will be able to identify missing features and UX flaws.
  • Test New Features. Eventually, it might become a sandbox to test new multiplayer features, e.g. chats, mentions and discussions. We’ll see.

And please, don’t destroy others’ work! It’s easy to break something now, but if we notice intentional harm, we’ll have to limit your rights in the Space.

This is just a prototype, so expect some chaos

How to Participate

Join the Space, wait to be accepted (it’s still a manual process), and then feel free to browse, add more stuff or expand existing pages.

While Anytype’s current discussion features are basic, we encourage your creativity. For example, we created a “Discuss” section where you can write your “replies” just by appending them at the bottom of a document. It’s messy, but might be fun!

Join us now and be a part of shaping the future of Local-First communities! https://invite.any.coop/bafybeib3eh3aowv24v5rv4japcrgqw4ly7fx3h4lca2vbh3kqdy7hasoxe#29SnvBDxo83r5MooE2FdSa6wPmwJKxLkuZEinqfvoCKt

P.S.: We need a good logo! Feel free to propose your options here in comments or right inside there in “Discussions”

I have a little idea for the logomark, inspired by the current branding:

In case you don't see it...

It’s a pixel-style “LF”︎ for Local-First Lovers.

It’s not really pixel-style, but in any case, reversing the reading direction of a letter to force it into a logo is never a good idea.

I suppose not because I slanted it and filled it with Anytype’s gradient style of coloring. I stand corrected on that one. But regarding the reversing of a letter, I never saw it as an issue with logos. As long as it’s readable and well-executed, it’s really up to the client (in this case, Anytype) to decide if they like it or not.

If it’s not up to standards, the team can just take inspiration from it or create/use something else entirely.

Hello, everyone. Since there are a lot of users with only viewer permissions in the space, I suppose there was already a bad actor who tried to destroy what others created. Or is there another reason why half the space members are editors and another half are viewers?

This goes against all logic in design. The very, very few companies that have opted for an inverted letter in their logo have nearly all given up on it.
It’s a whim of old teenagers nostalgic for L33T speak who haven’t finished their design studies.

Did you know that the primary function of design is not to be pleasing to the eye? Maybe you’re used to reading in a mirror, but don’t consider your exotic preference for nomality.

Well, I’m not familiar with L33T and I’ve completed my degree in the arts, majored in Visual Communication.

As I’ve mentioned in my earlier comment, I was just inspired by their current branding.

You obviously don’t like my idea. I got it the first time already. Why don’t you offer suggestions to fix my exotic heart or submit a design of your own.

Same question here ?

So maybe this viewer issue is just a precaution measure? Since a number of users with previously only viewer permissions have been made editors now. I presume this is done manually, as Anytype does not implement any kind of space entering revision process where permissions could be added after a certain amount of time, for example.

I think some kind of suggestion model would greatly benefit these public spaces. You would have editors, viewers, and viewers with suggestion permission, similar to what Google Docs does, if I am not mistaken.

@vasily Hi! Are there any brand guidelines with requirements for creating similar logos?

@TamerlanPRO Not really. This logo and cover design was created by someone from the community, I don’t even know who made it  And I love it too!

@Adda oops, just saw your mesage. The viewer issue was mostly technical. At some point we saw a lot of join requests from “Untitled” users and thought that someone tried to invite many bots and accepted them as “viewers” at first. However, after some investigation, we found out that it was a bug in our sync protocol (legit usernames were synced with a delay) which we immediately fixed and I promoted most of them to Editors too.

Plus, we found out that our initial “indefinite viewers space” implementation was not so “indefinite” and we also fixed it

The Local-First Lovers Club is the first known space for us with so many real users, so we’re fixing technical issues right in flight. Good that we have such a beta test

If I forgot someone — just ping me here

No worries. Thank you for reaching out. It got sorted out in the end. Exploring the space have been quite interesting, and I have quite a few links bookmarked for investigation thanks to this. Thanks for the idea.

Hi @vasily, can you clarify if the community is still looking for logos? I think that’s why @TamerlanPRO is asking for brand guidelines. I also submitted the design above, but it looks like the Space has an official logo already? (Love the purple LFLC, btw) Thanks!

I like the current one, so I think we can leave it as is  But you can propose more logos for internal sections instead of just emojis.

There is no more purple logo, @anton replace it by a pixel earth with a cyan background… I wonder why.

:boom: Please rejoin Local-First Club lovers (here is the link)

Hey, Local-First Club lovers! When we launched our little experiment, we anticipated that something might break and potentially impact the space. That’s exactly what happened last week!

We made some improvements to the sync protocol, but it affected seven spaces with some legacy code, including the Local-First Club. A bug caused the application to flood with snapshots, leading to crashes, especially on mobile devices.

We’re moving our LFLC to a new space that won’t crash the app or consume all your memory. You can leave the old one.

Please join the new space here: https://invite.any.coop/bafybeib3eh3aowv24v5rv4japcrgqw4ly7fx3h4lca2vbh3kqdy7hasoxe#29SnvBDxo83r5MooE2FdSa6wPmwJKxLkuZEinqfvoCKt

P.S. We have fixed the bug, but if you experience any issues with the vault, such as app crashes or long loading times, please check the Space ID. If you find it here, write to us:

The problem was localized quickly and did not cause any data loss issues.

If I have a space that I share with someone, should we create a new space? I also noticed that the history is incredibly long and I wonder if this is connected to this issue and could lead into issues.

Can you give me Space ID, we will check? Also, you can upgrade to the latest beta or alpha version and compare. Some slownesses were due to other reasons and they have been fixed recently

It worries me and really doesn’t make me want to use or share other spaces! Especially since you haven’t really answered the question:

If we have to migrate our spaces every time a major internal update occurs, it’s more than inconvenient, it’s ULTRA limiting! Why doesn’t the Spaces infrastructure update? Why is the version of a space set in stone?
