Ability to open bookmarks as objects on mobile

WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND?

When viewing all bookmarks in the Android app (edit: also tried iPad app and same issue there), whenever I tap on any of them, it takes me to the website instead of opening the bookmark in the app so I can edit the details. This is confusing and frustrating as I have tried to search for a way to open the bookmark to see details but couldn’t. So if this feature is already there, perhaps you can improve its discoverability and make it more intuitive to use.

HOW COULD IT BE DONE?

Separate the “open bookmark” from the “edit bookmark” actions in the UI. Make both possible to do from any type of layout. On mobile, consider making use of long press to bring a context menu.

REAL WORLD USE CASES

I like to add more details to the bookmark that I just added, right now it’s not possible from the Android or iPad app.

RECOMMENDED ALTERNATIVES

Long press on bookmark, changing layout of the bookmarks query, toggling properties, etc

ADDITIONAL CONTEXT

If bookmarks are objects, don’t make them behave very differently than other objects. You should only open the bookmark link in the browser if the user intended that.

Have a look at the following steps (on iOS). You should be able to open bookmark as object to edit it.

I agree it will be great if we have easier and more consistent way to open any objects with ‘source’ property.

Hi C.c

Thanks for the reply! Yes, that works on the iPad, but it’s quite confusing and inconsistent with other platforms.

I also figured out how to edit on Android: go to All objects, Bookmarks, then find the bookmark there and long press and open as object. This feature has been added relatively recently (DROID-3896 All objects | Introduce long-click context menu for objects by konstantiniiv · Pull Request #2665 · anyproto/anytype-kotlin · GitHub) but it’s not at all easy to figure out. Perhaps a more consistent approach can be found on all platforms?

I’m experiencing the same issue on Android, and it’s extremely inconvenient to edit or view the content of bookmark objects. The current steps are too long (almost unusable), and they broke my workflow, sadly:

Go to “All objects” → “Bookmarks” → find the bookmark → long press → open as object.

Please consider adding an option to open bookmarks the same way as before. (like just clicking bookmarks, in any pages)

More details,

  1. Open a bookmark as an object in a list in the Query page (of bookmark type).
  2. Open a bookmark as an object in the content of any object.
  3. … And maybe more cases … as before.

This doesn’t even work on iOS and one has to open the bookmark in a browser first, then use the share functionality of the browser popup and then one could open it as an object.

Opening a bookmark directly is fine for me - very convenient as well.
But not having a context menu is less than ideal.

There could be an option if the user in general wants to open bookmarks as an object or directly. Then this setting would be universal (if a bookmark is embedded in a page or listed in the query).

But there need to be manipulation options from the query / collection list as well (long press menu). The menu there could be the same like the ... menu within an object.

Long press doesn’t work for me on OriginOS 5 (Android 15).

Where is the long press? The only place this could have been used, All Objects, has been removed.

Yep, I’ve got this issue too. I have an untitled bookmark, created in a project page. It takes me to a website, but I can’t edit the title and I can’t delete it. I can’t find any “all objects” menu. In the Bookmarks, nothing happens when I long press a bookmark. So this is just a messy entry in my bookmarks list forever? Why can’t we just delete them from the bookmarks section if we don’t need them anymore? So confusing why this would be an “added feature” - this is literally a basic function to be able to create and also delete these?

Platform: Android app

It is strange that Bookmark actions are not available on mobile. It is not possible to do anything with Bookmarks after they’ve been created.

Considering that it is not possible to do anything with inline links either, this is very debilitating.

Please restore long-press actions even if they are causing other issues.

It works now from query view on Android :tada:

To everyone that commented or subscribed to this post, try updating to the latest app version

Right. It is technically implemented but the Source can’t be edited so we’re 50% there.

Hello, I’ve added to the latest release the possibility to open bookmarks from the query. You can open a bookmark with a long click and then choose “Open as an object” from the menu. In the editor, you can see the source and the linked URL of the bookmark. By clicking this URL, a modal menu opens where you can change the source. After changing the source, press “Reload object content”, and the bookmark will update its content with the new URL. It’s all already there. Please check.

Aahhh, OK! It never occurred to me that Source in that pop-up dialog is an editable field. I was mainly focused on the buttons below, expecting an explicit Edit or something like that.

Thank you, that works!

You’re welcome! I’d like to know where I could also add the possibility to open bookmarks as an object, perhaps on the Search screen. If you can tell me where to implement this functionality, it would be very helpful :slightly_smiling_face: . thanks

Thank you so much for the feedback and the effort.

In most of my cases, Bookmarks are embedded in the Pages (I still operate in the Notes mode ) and I access them from a Page. Either to navigate, or edit.

I can confirm that, after a short-hold the block with the bookmark gets selected and there is the “open object” button. That opens the Bookmark as an object, tapping the Source shows the edit dialog and the Source is actually editable(!).

If there is anything left to learn/improve/do here, it is that some behaviour is non-standard, so to speak, and gets “lost” in a way. I don’t have concrete suggestions at the moment, other than fairly general ones like “standardize the way editable fields look” or “use explicit actions instead of a tap, semi-long, and long press”, etc. Now that I know how it works, I cannot unlearn it. But I’m fairly sure that other, even less-technical, users will hit these bumps frequently. I’m a fan of explicit actions on mobile, for the sake of simplicity and peace of mind.

So, to recap, the functionality indeed is there! I overlooked the full extent of the recent changes. Now I’ve also commented on the feature request, so it can be resolved. Thanks again!

Thanks a lot for the feedback — I really appreciate it.

I agree that we need a more unified approach to working with bookmark objects, and this is something we’re already working on. We have a task in progress where we’re trying to account for all these nuances.

I’ll share more details once it’s closer to release. Thanks again!:slightly_smiling_face:

I have added some notes to a bookmark a long time ago, so it’s not easy to find it through the Bookmark query or recent objects

I can find it through search, but there is no option to open it as an object from search results, even if I touch and hold. The only option that appears is “show related objects"

Am I missing something?
