Yes, and the one feature really really nobody else had is gone. If you simply compare features now everyone has some things the others don’t – and depending on your use case you can choose. Also, still more than a few very basic bugs left to fix, which all by itself would be a deal breaker for many people I know.
Nope I don’t compare apps feature by feature, the ethics and vision is above all, I need to sort of trust the founders. I know people are skeptical because of the founders’ original nationality, but it’s precisely this and their humanist declarations fighting against censorship that have reinforced my respect and confidence in them and in this project.
Of course, the ideal would have been 100% open source from the outset, but their vision required major investment and it’s better than having to wait a decade to see the light of day. What’s more, they’re seriously considering going open source with a security delay, which is a very honorable move.
Their initial enthusiasm for declaring Anytype as an Open Source project caused a lot of ink to flow, mine included, and I’m sure they regret that their enthusiasm led them to this confusion, but their code and license is already much further down the road to freedom than most of their competitors will EVER be.
I hope your frustration is a reflection of the hope you had in this project, and I’d like to encourage you to believe in it for another year, because I think they’ve taken a long time to pave the way to their success, but it will become obvious to many before 2026. I could be wrong, but I’m still a believer.
I’ve made my choice, one of patience, because Anytype isn’t production ready, so I have no choice but to bite the bullet, and I can’t blame them for bugs that haven’t been solved for a long time, since it’s a beta. So should you.
Please, anyType team, take the constructive criticism seriously about bugs not tended to, closed and market as ‘solved’ even though they are written about being alive, and then people discover devs don’t even know about them. You should of course prioritize. But existing bugs marked solved should be reopened and community should be told at the minimum that they were added to the bug tracker. Anything else feels like ghosting
Obsidian’s plugins - it’s a double edged sort. It needs balanced approach. I, and many others have also precisely left obsidian because so much functionality is disjointed, with each plugin having their own settings…there is no cohesion. Plugins ought never to be relied upon as main functionality. Plugins are there for temp relieving of missing functionality, or edge case scenario. Not CORE functionality for years.
@flypenguin says AT is the only one that ‘had’ ‘true open source’ license. I don’t think this is factual at all. For example I believe affine and logseq are fully open source, in the way we mean open source.
No, I do not have ‘mistrust’ of some of the founders because of where they come from. That is silly beyond belief. I know the world wants you to think that, but it is not logical, it is propaganda. Why? Because good people are everywhere, every single nation. Good people outweigh the bad people. So to taint every member of a country with one brush stroke makes zero sense.
Trust is established with time and on merit, not where people come from!
@Razor Hi, please have a rest. I believe most members active in the discussion feel the potential of Anytype and hence have the urge to improve it. The effort of Anytype’s team is recognised. Since Anytype is one of a kind in the market, we believe it can really be something big. We hope the obstacles along the path can be removed as soon as possible. That’s why we are so eager to provide suggestions. We are your friends. We are on your side.
… my bad, it’s an FR (have the horizontal scroll bar visible on large collections with several columns, without having to scroll all the way to the bottom). And with a keyboard shortcut I can’t remember (I have trouble with all keyboard shortcuts ^^).
But never mind, I just wanted a quick example (and to give another, I’ll first carefully retest all my reports still open ^^), not asking you anythong .
Yeah this horizontal scroll problem is from the start of sets development and still not solved. I’ve written to product and design leads to have a conversation on this.
“well”. I kinda agree, yet if the app is unusable or “not for me” – ethics and vision don’t solve my problem. (not saying anytype is, just putting “[…] above all” in perspective).
well, it was …
sorry, this is not a logical conclusion. if (!) they said “our investors wanted it that way” – fine. but “open source” plus “requires money” equals “license change” is not a valid equation.
i’m ignorant enough to say “don’t care”. if you’re “not there”, it does not matter how close you are. and i do see a risk here, for myself. i have been burned by data lock in a couple of times over the last 20+ years, so this is the horizon i am talking about.
“had”?? you realize i’m still here, right?
aha.
i would like to emphatically agree!
thanks . that might be true – i might not have found those …
i fully hope you don’t reference to me saying that – because this is absolutely not what i am talking about if I talk about “trust”. (just to be sure, because I talk about “trust” a lot)
but I guess I said my piece here, and while this is kinda fun, i think i will just wait and see what the next update brings on great new stuff . and rant about open source in the meantime a bit …
Hi flypenguin,I believe that Anytype has made the utmost effort to catch up on progress. As for some bugs, they might indeed be quite fundamental, but they are also a result of difficult choices in direction. We have all encountered many large applications that do not fix minor bugs, even though they seem to require little technical effort. However,if they are not on the roadmap, the current schedule is already challenging enough for everyone.Even if it’s a basic request,it cannot be adequately considered. Many of us are being pushed, and it’s not that users should endure these bugs indefinitely. It’s just that as adults,we make choices. If we insist too strongly on others following a certain path, even if it seems logical,it is actually not very rational.
Regarding your continuous inquiries about the details of the open-source license,I think it is a bit excessive.Anytype is very lenient for personal client use and personal self-hosting services, and does not overly demand copyright or patents.I believe Anton has made it very clear that the restriction is on selling the software or self-hosting services to third parties. This is not a vague boundary but a very serious commercial act. There will not be controversies like Bitwarden’s private SDK issue, where you might"accidentally"violate the usage agreement in"normal"use.Anytype’s current license, including the situations Anton mentioned, will only be violated if you have a clear intention to sell Anytype’s software for profit.I think as an ordinary individual user,or even a small team, using Anytype solely for personal or internal use,you should not"accidentally"sell Anytype’s software source code to third parties,or"accidentally"sell the self-hosted service of Anytype. Therefore,we don’t need to scrutinize the open-source license like a lawyer or a client company. The Anytype team is not so stingy, and over-pursuing these things will only distract their development efforts.Perhaps, having less control and more patience in observation will make the world a better place.
Great. I don’t – I want to use Anytype in the long run, and this is the main worry I have, and it was the main distinguishing factor. So I really, really don’t care what you think about it.
if you mean me, well, i think that i should be able to enter text without it getting automatically deleted. I think it is rational to not want to have this. Also, feel free to care about your issues, I care about mine.
Thank you so much for making my case. If you think that “I think” is a rational approach in the legal area, you may want to re-think.
Speaking generally now:
Here’s the thing. We should very much be for more speech than less.
But we ought to recognize that endless discussions on the same topic at some point does not advance the discussion and takes away time from the dev team to do dev work.
It’s good to read the room. If one extols their point 2,3 times and don’t get the answer they want…to just let it go. Because by that time, it is clearly visible there is difference of opinion and no matter how many more slightly nuanced posts one will make, won’t bridge the divide in thinking between the two parties.
So why waste continually everyone’s precious time?
Regarding your perspective,it’s actually quite understandable. However, when looking at the issue from this angle, the best approach is to act on behalf of the company or as a client and prepare a detailed contract that clearly outlines various amounts and clauses.Print it out and go to the Swiss anytype company to find Anton himself or the head of their legal department.Discuss every part of the contract with them in detail, record your negotiations openly, and finally, have both parties sign where necessary.Constantly questioning on the forum and in replies is actually quite pointless;it will only lead to an unpleasant outcome.
As you mentioned, you’ve been pressing Anton on the forum so much, and he has verbally said many things, some of which are just directional indications without clear conditions.Even if you take screenshots of your conversations,it doesn’t seem very suitable for legal accountability, does it?I believe you are someone who pursues efficiency, which should be contradictory to what you want, right?
Additionally, when I say"I think,"I hope you can understand that it’s not a wishful thinking based on not understanding the terms they have defined. For these matters,it is quite clear and doesn’t require subjective judgment to know. What I mean by"I think"is that as an individual user,I believe you probably wouldn’t engage in activities that are too profit-driven.In other words,I feel that you are likely just an ordinary individual user, not overly mercenary or profit-seeking.You seem like a very kind person, just a bit particular, right?
ehm … thanks? and yes, I have no intentions of creating an anytype hosting solution. my interest is as I keep stating: how “fucked” am i once anytype goes away for whatever reason? currently the license is “all rights reserved”, so development cannot continue, visible code or not. and yes, i am more and more an open-source fan.
also i’m not “pressing” if you ask me, I just point out the things that I truly think simply don’t line up. if that creates pressure, maybe there’s some substance to this .
exactly my point .
it might lead to a broader discussion, though.
i’m sure that i can get this whatever document (should i need it, which i dont ) from Any, anton seems open to that – yet this would solve none of my long-term “worries”, and the short-term ones only for myself.
