More intuitive/obvious Multiple Window opening

WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND?

More intuitive, stream-lined “multiple window” opening.

HOW COULD IT BE DONE?

Add “open in new window” on … object menu list.

Ideally, it has one additional time saving step. Under open in new window, we can select “side window”, “open as new main”, which automatically adjust opened windows and new window.

Main one becomes full 50% left. Split ones divides right 50% equally. I.e. if only 1 side window, it takes up the entire left side, but if 2 side windows, left top half and left bottom half are split between two side windows.

REAL WORLD USE CASES

I’ve been looking for a way to do Split View on Mac so I can open multiple notes at once. However, this was not obvious to me. I had almost assumed this was not possible in AnyType. With above implementation, users will immediately see Anytype has such capability.

RECOMMENDED ALTERNATIVES

Alternative way to adjust window sizes maybe under menu. “Resize all windows automatically” as an option. So upon clicking this will resize all windows. For this I feel user still need to be able to choose a main window. So it may need to ask user which one is main window first.

In fact, at the very least even without automatic resizing, I believe AnyType should make new open window capability more obvious to new users. I’ve seen others confused as well.

ADDITIONAL CONTEXT

Probably, I’m one of these confused users. And I still don’t get it. How is it possible to open several notes at the same time?
At the moment I need to open one note, copy text, close note, open another note and paste the information…

It’s on menu under the window.

I’ve written a quick guide. So hopefully if someone searches for the similar situation will find it, and don’t get into the wrong conclusion as I did.

Welcome to the Anytype community @SebastianA. There are a few ways to open object in new window:

  • Keyboard shortcut (which you can check through the ? button at the bottom right) for new window; that’s Cmd+Shift+N on Mac
  • At search pane (Cmd+S), after searching the object you need, you can cmd+enter the object to open it in new window.
  • For linked/related object in another object, you can cmd+click.

On Windows, cmd is likely to be replaced by ctrl.

On Split View matter, I believe the inability to easily align all windows is an innate MacOS issue. I personally use other program to help me with that which is probably not ideal for everyone.

However, rather than smoothing the opening process alone, I would prefer Anytype to implement it with tabs.

It is not beautiful, but it definitely works. Thanks both of you!
