I hope that I’m not coming across that Anytype app level security isn’t important, nor that a multi-layered approach is effective. Clearly, these points are all true. I agree. The main point I’m making is that often the solutions people are using (or want) don’t necessarily fit the use case—leading to poorer security than desired.
Since we’ve already used storing credentials/secrets in Anytype as an example, let’s run with this. Many users have suggested to provide more features on Anytype that is akin to using it as a password manager. But this is simply a bad idea because Anytype isn’t optimised for that. Often, these users are reusing passwords, copying+pasting onto forms manually, and executing a myriad of insecure habits. The optimal setup is to have unique randomly generated passwords for every account that get autofilled onto matching URLs—something that Anytype can’t do. Should we implement features that make it easier/better for storing credentials/using Anytype as a password manager? Personally, I think not. We should push people to use the right tools for the right job.
The same applies for the aforementioned comments. “If you leave Anytype open for a moment in public, someone has full access to your vault in seconds”. The point here is that leaving your device open in public gives somebody access to your entire device in seconds—including emails, password managers, whatever. Hence the solution here is to tell people to have the right device locking features on with the right habits—not to turn on PIN or autolock on Anytype. The former is a much better solution, why optimise for the latter?
The PIN has been implemented already, but it’s not designed for be as secure as locking your whole device—and I’m not sure there’s much benefit for it to go down that route. Again, I’m not saying we can’t/shouldn’t implement more security measures—but I’m often struck by how people mostly ignore device and general digital security practices and focus on Anytype app level security first.
I don’t see how this layer adds significant security. You assume parties that were able to steal your vault key. Wow, how could this happen? And if it could, why does it get more secure by adding a PIN-bypass to the key? PIN entering can be much easier observed than copying over the long key from a password manager. If you are concerned about your devices being already compromised and a party could capture your clipboard contents, then they also capture your PIN. If security is of so much concern, then you may consider to also request time-based auto-lock of Anytype so that it locks when you are distracted for a while. But also this could be easily realized by configuring your devices screen-lock behaviour accordingly. As I said: Many people may have a lot of data on devices outside Anytype which also is not meant for other parties eyes. Fixig the issue one level up - device level here - has the biggest impact. And it’s not just about technology: One of the most important factors in security is behaviour and learned, inherited patterns. Get used to a device screen-lock that kicks in after 60 Sekonds of inactivity which will help a lot. Yes it’s annoying depending on the type of work you do but it’s effective. Where I work, this is the fixed default which cannot changed by users. Yes, it sometimes bothers me, but it’s serving it’s purpose.
Fair enough, that’s what I thought was being argued for. If that’s already there, I don’t see what it is.
Downvote for whiteboard/canvas from me. You have a ton of apps for whiteboarding. Anytype is meant for something else, to collect and organise information. If AnyType would offer such non core functions, it will become too bloated.

They need to focus on their core principles and keeping up with their schedule.
Anytype lack consistency between the mobile app and the desktop app, I’m at a point where i don’t bother with the mobile app because it doesn’t have a consistent layout with my desktop ( Kanban View).

It’s the only reason I’m still using Obsidian + Excalidraw/Canvas from time to time. Very sadly it’s not even on the roadmap 
Btw, when will the results of this survey be released? Or the decisions based on its results?
We’ve had a few people fall sick/shortness on availability on the team, so I’m a little reluctant to give timelines—but we should definitely expect to share something in June. Need a couple weeks for all results to come in after we email blast it out, and then process it.
I would like to get feature-parity on Android-- at least for Calendar View & ToC, if not anything else for the time being. Thanks.
Isn’t „canvas" a perfect example of where the API could be really helpful?
Like, have a dedicated „visual sister" app next to AnyType that does magic to things like canvassing, whiteboarding, mindmapping, handwriting OCR etc in a wonderful, specialized, dedicated GUI, and that’s able to see and write to a related subset of objects in a space?
And have a user-friendly access control system that grants this visual sister app just as much access to a space as is needed, rather than exposing entire spaces, e.g. like the user/group-based access control system in Linux?
-– And this way, API-enable a whole universe of such specialized sister-apps als for other use cases, like
- RAG and AI analysis of just a few project-related collections, not of the entire space (e.g. related to a research project as part of a larger team effort that shares a space)
- Slack integration with just a few collections related to each slack channel, not with the entire space
- proper Epic/Story/Task planning with access to just a few team-related collections, not to the entire space
- a sister app for proper PDF-Generation and printing from within AnyType, to enable to generate letters, reports and books out of dedicated objects and collections in AnyType, which would need API access to all spaces, but not access to every object (only to those related to PDF-Generation, such as the actual contents to be exported, as well as letterheads, logos, CSS, and font files)
this is the vision for sure, being able to hand write and use canvas. thats one thing that AI will not be able to fulfill.
As humans we will always need to be able to use our hands. Its all apart of the “human experience”.
I bet there will be a discovery that validates this in the future. I could go deeper on this subject but i am afraid some are not ready for that yet…lol.
