Welcome to the community @GhostBird and @Tintin.
I also mainly work solo and don’t require much multiplayer features… but
Anytype is not a PKM at core… Anytype is a web3 program designed for users to browse and create contents with the rights to have private thoughts and private communication, supported by decentralisation and no-code language. Which users can decide if they want to share or keep their thoughts to themselves (hence the implementation of local-only as well as multiplayer). PKM is only the user interface for easy content creation.
For more information about web3, see this discussion.
The use cases so far apply to individual note taking / PKM (personal knowledge management). I agree with @banko that some folks just need more storage space.
Once more real use case examples come out for multiplayer and other Web 3.0 features, it should be more clear why folks would pay for membership.
Hello, total beginner here and still confused about whether a paid plan is for me.
I just need private notes, and I need them to seamlessly sync between my iPhone and Macbook. I also need them to be backed up, I obviously don’t want to lose any data. I suspect that, over time, the data will begin to take up a lot of space. It’s fine that it uses the storage on my Macbook.
But is the 1GB for backup and sync in the Explorer plan enough to backup and sync my data continuously and over time? Or am I just not understanding how the syncing and backup works? What is the 1GB really for in the Explorer membership? ELI5 please
@louise as Anton has explained, you can (in principle) self host. But to be honest, it is not so easy.
You can also sync by using WLAN, without internet connection.
But I can assure you that the 1 GB online Space is sufficient for a long time.
Using Anytype daily since five months, my data in the Space need only 200 MB. And that includes more than 150 pictures.
Off course it is a bad idea to push all the pictures from your 14 megapixel cam directly in the Space.
Reduce the size and set the JPG compression to 90%. In the result the pic needs only 300-400 kB instead of more then 5 MB.
For example: If you have 1000 pictures and each of them needs 300-400 kB, then they all together need about 300-400 MB from your 1 GB Space.
Together with about 1000 Pages or Notes etc. all your data need maybe 500 MB.
And about backups:
You can export all your data into a single ZIP file and put it onto an USB drive for storing it in a bank safe or so.
As you see, you can live good with 1 GB Space for a long time.
But if you really need more Space on Anytype’s server, isn’t it fair to pay for it?
If things haven’t changed… you can technically live with 1GB forever, because only the files count. It will still sync everything else (any note/page/task/etc that you create will still sync, even without free space available)
I agree! I was so excited about Anytime, I joined kind of early on and have dealt with all kinds of bugs or limitations because I strongly believed in it. But honestly, I think that the price asked is too high for what the app currently offers. And somehow, even if I understand that money is needed to maintain it and remain independent, I have the feeling that the amount doesn’t correspond to the current functionalities (some basic options are still missing and there are still bugs). So I am very sad but I will stop using Anytype. I also feel sad because I spent time on it, even had an interview with someone of the team to talk about the app… and even more time to export the data because honestly the export in Markdown does not work at all. I feel disappointed to end the story this way, but…
@Camille but you can use the app for free!
If I’m not completely wrong, you also have at least 1 GB storage for free!
Till here there is really nothing to complain about, right?
In case you seriously need more storage on their server, then you have to pay for it - that should be understandable.
If you don’t have the money you can somehow contribute in many ways - if you do so you’ll get even the increased storage for free.
What I do here in the forum as Bug Detective was worthy enough for the company to give me A LOT storage for free.
In my opinion the business model is really fair!
No one is excluded because of money.
I understand the charges for using storage space and for getting right to invite more editors. What I fail to grasp is the need to charge for a ‘user name’ or the ‘limit on number of viewers’.
One of the Anytype’s Core idea is to replace internet. On internet these two are free.
@Code-Jack Hi! You are right. And I understand that they need a business model. But I find it extremely expensive for what Anytime allows you to do, at least for now. I am a bit disappointed by the business model for an app that lacks basic features. I also feel I don’t recognise the philosophy which made that I was seduced by Anytype when it started… But this is my opinion and my needs. Thanks! I may delete the account now. Good luck with everything!
But there is no business model for the app itself!
Again: The app is for free!
That includes even the multiplayer thing and enough storage for an average private person.
What do you want more?
What you must pay for (if you really need it) is that thing they can’t give away for free: the bigger storage on their server.
It costs a normal prize, compared with a normal webhosting packet - in my opinion.
If any other company’s offer is cheaper, then you’re not a cu_sto_mer (couldn’t write the banned word, sorry), but the product - they make money with your data. Or they annoy you with adds.
Anytype doesn’t go this dirty way.
Everyone should think:
If you were the owner of the Anytype company - what would you do?
You have to pay the staff, the rooms, the servers etc.
You need money for that. But you’re a good person, so you want to make it truly fair from the depths of your heart.
What would you do to make it fair for everyone but at the same time to get the money you need for all that effort?
What I will say is Sovereignty is priceless… but sovereignty aren’t food for sustaining life
Most of us, early members, will get a year for free to see how features will manifest and settle in. A lot can happen in one year time - less bugs and more features… I guess it is fair to judge after this one year period; but it can be a critical year for Anytype to see if it can satisfy the expectations of users and passionate supporters.
Local-only / self-host mode which everyone can use for free, and the reputation points and karma system is a big grant for those who can’t pay… And don’t forget, users get to contribute and determine the future of Anytype.
Anytype is web3 application, which we currently can’t find anywhere else… what we do in Anytype is like building up websites but as simple as using PKM. This is a very big jump.
Dreamweaver is $275+/year for making web2 contents ← It takes a steep learning curve to master and you still need to find your own method to share to others (as multiple players or later publish)
When comparing to the note taking market, yes the PKM market is very competitive… but I find Anytype’s pricing quite fair
Notion Plus is $96/year & business $180/year ← That’s only $3 more for local encryption and data ownership; and it is less expensive for the upgraded model…
Roam Research $165/year or $500/5years ← That’s a less-similar price range in Anytype
Tana Free for now but expect around $100/year ← Also, similar price range. Users can decide if they want AI and online, or safety and local/peer-to-peer
Obsidian Sync is $48/year ← Single person, local but not encrypted and a lot functions are built upon Plugins
Of course, I also hope more features and less bugs will be happening in Anytype.
They aren’t changing for “username”, they are giving bonus perk if you buy “co-creator”. While I thought the “limit on number of viewers” would be way higher, and not < 100, bandwidth is expensive! (see below case of “free bandwidth”)
ohhh they are? please do let me know a free hosting/cloud/storage/etc service with unlimited bandwidth traffic!
I guess this must have been misunderstood by ppl, because most of the comments don’t make sense.
Its like if I want to host a webpage right now, I have to pay DNS, DOMAIN, HOSTING (space+cpu)… and some cases are cheap, others, well, not really.
Tomorrow is 3 weeks since the Memberships Town Hall! Likely getting closer to the full release of the memberships… can’t wait. just came here to say it is all
Free Bandwidth? May be none.
Free Username? Many. Almost everyone. (Twitter, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, etc.)
Number of views? Almost all. Even paid ones. (Twitter, Facebook, Medium, Wordpress, etc.)
I hope no one asks me to explain the above.
Not all users will be willing to pay for getting a Username clubbed with a publishing platform with limited viewership (limited editors may be ok) for one year, then loose all of it if they do not renew.
This model looks more like you pay once for both a domain name and web hosting on Anytype.
Antype is not is not a web hosting platform. It is an App with big possibilities.
So, Anytype team will have to find some solutions.
Self-hosting looked promising until it became too complex for simple users (non-programmers or people from no software background).
So, until a balance is found, users like me will use multiple platforms including Anytype. But, it is a long road ahead for Anytype to replace the internet.
BTW this message was for Anytype team. If you are one of them, I sincerely hope that you understand and analyse my message, and then reconsider it as a humble request.
If you are not from Anytype team, even then I understand your passion and need to defend Anytype pricing plan.
I hope you don’t ask me why “its free” and why its not a good case comparing Anytype to Twitter, Facebook, Google and Microsoft. (Medium actually is fairly limited).
I am not defending Anytype from “passion”, I am defending in hoping that Anytype does not do shady business to pay the cloud bills.
The only big issue I see, is the “limited views” (as in just reading like a normal webpage). I can understand completely that limit for now, but when Anytype becomes sustainable and with profits, a larger number of views or a price model like other cloud hosting services is needed.
